The official pre-clinton era sr sport cruiser thread

Thanks Ron, I will have to get those pics taken and posted. Maybe after I replace the rubber in my rub rail?? Maybe some advice on that by the way??

Your dash looks good, at least the sister ship does. I agree about the plain white. It may not be a head turner, but it also never makes you say "what were they thinking?". It is cool to see the water from that high. do you always drive from the bridge? Do you rock and roll with the waves a lot more up there?

Eric
The lower helm in my boat was an option and I have seen it on sisterships, but I don't have it. Which is fine with me. I grew up on my Dad's 1970 ChrisCraft Commander which had a lower helm and we NEVER ran the boat from below. And that was way before bridge enclosures became all the rage. Spent many a rainstorm on the bridge equipped with nothing more than a yellow slicker!

As for wave action and being up high, it doesnt seem to be a concern for either me or my wife and daughter. We're used to it since we're ALWAYS being blown by. Especially when coming out of no-wake zones - we get battered by that "from behind" squat wake from accellerating boats. We've also been on ocean runs with following 6' rollers from the rear stbd quarter - a few picture frames toppled over down below buat that was about it.

I don't know much about rubrail repairs but if you start another thread in maybe the "general repair and maintenance" section, have no doubt there will be people who can help. I don't recall ever seeing a thread about that topic. Good Luck!

Great thread...1989 was a very good year!

We were at the marina tonight arranging things when the admiral said "These TV's have got to go...how can we rig up a couple of small flat screens?"

She is right...the old Sony analog sets blow. Any ideas on brackets~location? Will the OEM TV antenna on the radar arch receive HD air broadcasts?...or do I have to replace that too? We are not interested in a dockside cable subscription or Direct TV at this time. I just want to get a decent HD over the air picture from my local stations (West Palm & Miami/Ft. Lauderdale). Any ideas:huh:

I put a flat pannel above the mid berth entrance in my boat. I had to remove a couple little "walls" along the step down, but they were not structural. That was the only big flat place I could mount one, but your boat is a lot bigger and you may have other spots. I was at the boat show last weekend - that is where they are putting the tv on quite a few of the newer cruisers now too.

Sorry, I did not cath the question about the helm paint. I used Interlux or Awlgrip (can't remember which) topside paint. I used a roller and tipped with a brush.

The mid berth idea works in a dancer but Express models don't have that area...that's where the starboard engine is located. My salon is large and the couch faces the galley which is to starboard. I'm thinking some where along the bulkhead that separates my guest state room from the galley...I would need a good articulating bracket to position it properly...I haven't found the bracket....at least not one that will survive a marine enviroment.

Let me know if/when you find a bracket. Have a 19" flat screen w/ integral DVD player that sits on a pedestal on the countertop when I need it. Schlep it down the dock for any overnighters, but would love to have a permanent adjustable mount.

I have used one of these before and it worked great, just make sure you have something substantial to mount it on or can through bolt it. I have seen everything from snaps on a stap to bungee cords to hold it back against the wall underway.

Did you use this bracket on your boat? I am having a hard time visulizing that bracket remaining stationary in a "dynamic" enviroment such as we encounter in a boat underway. I need to see some set screw arrangement with "teeth" that will totaly lock down...otherwise I envision the monitor swinging all over the place.

Just found this thread for old boats.

All y'all talkin 'bout tvs on a boats!

What color interior(s) have any of switched to from the early Reagan era, two-tone (Biege/brown)? I'd like to re-do the cockpit area, and am wondering what color scheme folks have went with.

thank you!

Gregg

My monitor usually settles to a slightly tipped down position while cruising - not a big deal. One thing I did was put a big piece of stainless steel behind the TV mounting bracket so it didn't pull through the wood. The bracket I used had about an 8" dia. plate and spots for four screws, I mounted that to a stainless plate with about a 1.5' dia. plate with 4 bolts through the wood. Something you may want to consider.

Gregg -
I replaced my cockpit vinyl with tan / white. The cabin got a fake wood floor, vinyl flooring that glues down in strips shaped like individual peices of wood. The carpet inside changed from the dark burgandy to light tan/grey. The upholstery is waiting for more money! Eventually that will be similar to the cockpit, I think. I am waiting on that because I can't do it myself, so it will cost quite a bit. The "wood" floor made the biggest difference, looks pretty good and updates the boat's feel. It was pretty cheap and not too hard to do either.

Eric,

Tan/white seems to be a nice change of pace. Is the white a bright white? off-white? What about the vinyl covered pieces on the gunwales? Do you have any interior pics that you could share?

Gregg

Pics would be great, welcome to the Pre-Clinton club! Sprink, I can't remember what your berth looks like, but I was thinking about mounting the the bulkhead on port side so it can swing into opening and be seen while in the bed. Have to get in the water first! By the way Ron, interior panels are going back in, and the new interior lights are almost all mounted. Need you to come down and do the fresh water flush. I need to go to the store and measure out the pieces I need.

Mark
Compared to the tasks you've undertaken on your baby, the fresh water flush is going to be refreshingly SIMPLE!

I must have been recovering from my knee surgery when this thread started and missed it until today. I am happy to be in this era. I like flat glass and backward arches.

Ron and I have had a number of conversations about our boats and even though I have posted some of thes pics I will re-post some of them.

Our 340 was originally graced with the tasteful Maroon and Mauve color theme. With this pallete was a whole shitload of kinda pinkish wall, hullside and overhead surfaces. Not wanting to go to the expense, yet, of changing all of that out we chose other colors to tone down the pink. My wife and I did all the re-upholstery ourselves.

One of the first things we did was to lose the original 10" TV and VCR. We put in this 15" Dell LCD. I enlarged the opening where the old TV was and trimmed it out in teak. After I took this picture I realized I could see behind the TV so all of that is now black. We only watch TV on or in the bed so it works fine on a solid mount.

When we decided to buy the boat we knew we were going to have to have the cockpit vynil replaced but when we took delivery the broker handed us a box with a bunch of stuff that went with the boat. Inside was all brand new Sea Ray factory seat skins. We changed those and then refinished all the teak in the cockpit last year.

We just replaced the cabin lighting 2 weeks ago. Here is the new.

But our favorite thing is the extended swim platform.

Oh yeah....we also re-striped the boat. All of the mauve is gone and we used burgandy and silver.

There is still plenty to do though. This year she gets an inverter and new instrument panels from Scott Cambria. And we are not staying as close to home port this year no matter what gas prices do.

I'm gonna start a new thread if all this ends up being guys talking about the big sedan bridge and how wide their boat is and diesel power, built in espresso machines and washer and dryer:lol:
Where are the REAL old school owners? The ones with interior so old and dry-rotted when you sit down the disenigrating fabric makes you look like pigpen. Boats so old, that not only do they not have replacment parts, they can't even remember who made them. I want to hear from the real "blue collar" owners!:smt038

How about a 1973. Man I'm not even sure what president we had when mine was built. I got to hand it to some of these pics on here. I'm embarrased. The above quote matches my boat pretty well. I am re doing it with the same as original power...stuff that isn't even made anymore. I am for the time being just trying to get her functional. Once that is done I'll sweat the details later. Once the weather breaks I'll post some pics. For now however most of the interior from the deck is now in the shop...whats left of it.

Norcal - that looks sweet! And to think - I was proud of my re-fit. Now i feel inadaquite. My swim platform is original and everything....:smt089

Norcal, that grill post mount hidden under the swim ladder cover on the swim platform is very nice. Where do you store the grill and its post when you're underway?
