The Long Island Loop – Points of Interest

Well, I just reserved my time off, we will be taking August 14th thru August 29th. My plan was to head from our home port on the Hudson, through LI Sound, up to maybe Boston. I haven't really planned my stops yet, so it would be neat if we could all meet up somewhere.

Greg, sounds good, we should be back in the area of the North shore, LI and Mystic on the 15th/16th. If we miss it, you have to come right back by our home port in Mystic sooner or later:grin:
Plenty of great places to raft, up the Mystic River, Ram Island right outside the Mystic River or Watch Hill RI. Our local crew is always warm and welcoming. The more the merrier. :smt038

Can you guys recommend good places for dinner at these ports (I have so far suggestions for only two restaurants)?

Westhampton - TBD
Greenport - TBD
Montauk - Gossmans dock
Fire Island - Flynn's is great for lunch

Thanks,
Alex.

For Greenport the Rhumb Line is good and just a block from the water. Claudios is right on the water, some hate it some love it...

There are a lot of great places in Greenport. Claudios on the water is more bar type food, however the Claudios next door is great, food is very good. There is a great BBQ on main st and several other good places, you dont have to worry about finding a spot there, just depends what your in the mood for.

Great, sounds like greenwich village in the city. No wander most people advice not to miss Greenport. Do you have any suggestions on the other places?

Montauk - Gossmans dock
Fire Island - Flynn's is great for lunch

Westhampton

Magic's Pub - Burgers and bar
Post Stop Cafe - Great brunch and Dinner - American
The Beach Bakery - Breakfast and lunch
Westhampton Steak House - Well Steak!
Starr Boggs - High end - Real good Seafood

All are walking distance from the municpal marina on main street with other shops. The steak house is another few blocks away but still with in reach.

When you stay at the municipal marina - ask the dockmaster for beach passes to the ocean beach. You will have a great time, get excited!

I would agree with Rocket's recommendations. My favorite is the Steak House for dinner. The bakery is a must for breakfast. There's also two good ice cream shops on Main Street before walking the kids back to the boat at night.

Alex

When are you planning on taking your trip? We'll be at Montauk Yacht Club and Townsend Manor sometime last week of July or first week of August and will be at WHB Town Marina for another weekend likely in July.

We were thinking 2nd week in August.

Thanks Rocket and Brian. Do you have any suggestions for Montauk (or should I stick with Gossmans Dock)? Anything for Fire Island? I'm looking to have lunch at Flynn's as we enter the LI area on the way here (day 1). I've also read that Watch Hill has a good restaurant, would you agree or should I look for something else (this is for the last day of the trip since FI will be our last port on the way home)?

I was planning to do the trip either in last week of July or first week of August. I was told that one of the boats (Rod) who's planning to go with us can't do 1st week in August, so that leaves last week of July or 2nd week in August. It would be nice if I can meet you guys. Other folks said it's way too early to commit to any dates, so for now our dates remain floating to some degree.

Ice Cream in WestHampton!! Yes - Called Shocks homemade ice Cream. Oh how i need the spring to come.

Also - You can take your Dinghy down the canal, they have a public dock right behind main street - lots of fun for the kids.

Montauk - If you are staying at the Yacht club the food is great.

Daves Grille is fantastic, best Restaurant in montauk. Davesgrill.com

Gossman's

Also a great Seafood place - right on the corner of Star Island Road and west lake drive - I forgot the name but the seafood was tops.

Alex, I hope you end up with the second week in August, maybe we can meet!

Montauk has a good Chinese place in town (short cab ride) that will take your fresh fish catch (or buy on the dock) and cook it however you like. A really cool experience and delicious!

Watch Hill's restaurant is so so at best. Also, it's only open on weekends Friday to Sunday for dinner (maybe lunch too but I've never had lunch there). I would agree with Rocket on MYC for dinner. Great food, great views, great outdoor bar....even if you're staying at Star Island, just walk across the street, well worth it. If you want to skip Flynn's there's a new restaurant in Kismet, Surf's Out. I thought it was pretty good for a first year restaurant, should be even better this summer.

I just looked at MYC site, wow, the place looks awsome. I'm getting very excited about the trip. At this point I'm thinking to add an extra day and may be spend one night on the hook for a change. Shelter Island looks vey cool place to take the time exploring it. Very protected and looks most desireble for anchoring over night.

Russ,
At this time I'm strongly considering and reaching out to my companions for the week of Aug 7th to 14th. I discussed with my wife the idea of adding a night on the hook at Shelter Island, she liked that additon to the plan. So, we'll be going for 8 days/ 7 nights now.

Here's my updated itinerary after adding extra day (looks like after all we'll be able to visit Sag Harbor as well):

CIM to Fire Island - lunch stop
Fire Island to Westhampton - 1st night
Westhampton to Sag Harbor - lunch stop
Sag Harbor to Shelter Island - 2nd night
Shelter Island to Greenport - 3rd-4th nights
Greenport to Montauk - 5th-6th nights
Montauk to Fire Island - 7th night
Fire Island to CIM - Back home

Nice! We are thinking;

Aug 6th and 7th, Greenport, Mitchell Marina
Aug 8th and 9th Westhampton Marina
Aug 10th thru 13th Atlantique Marina
Aug 14th Sag or 3 mile harbor
Aug 15 home to Mystic

Where do you think might be the best time/place to meet? What works? i can adjust

Russ,

This is funny, as I travel Eastbound you go West and we stay in sort of opposite locations, when I go West you go East. LOL. Looks like first option we should review is the Aug 8th date. It looks like this is when I travel from Westhampton to Sag while you work your way from Greenport to Westhampton. Since I’m newbie to LI waters I can’t recommend many places to meet, but what looks pretty inviting and accommodating place is Shelter Island (Coecles Harbor). In fact, I thought that 8th being Sunday it’ll provide a window of opportunity to meet LI CSR members, if anyone else wishes to join, at Shelter Island.

If you find the first option inconvenient, the other place we could choose is sort of a mid point between Westhampton and Peconic Bays area. I see one spot called Cormorant Pt, which looks to be somewhat protected. My C-Map chart doesn’t give me detailed reading above Shinnecock Bay, so I don’t see if there’s enough water to anchor.

Before I go on to other alternatives let me know what you think so far.

Thanks,
Alex.
