The last Richmond, VA Confederate Monument comes down

I do deeply hope had I been alive then I would have been on the right side. Just as today I hope to be on the right side of our moral issues.

I remind myself all arguments for slavery were at their very core were based on the convenience and interest of someone other than the slave. Arguments opposed were based at their core on the belief that slaves were human beings, and therefore deserved human rights regardless of who it inconvenienced. Does that ring a bell as to any big moral issues in America today?

Too bad Gen McClellan was such a coward and wimp. Then the war would have ended in Virginia after only about a year and there would be no confederate monuments and one less garbage political thread cluttering up this once grand boating site. Nevermind, it would just be replaced by another garbage political thread.

The oath taken by officers prior to War Between the States was quite different from the current oath. Officers like Lee could not reconcile invading their own states and firing on their own people. They therefore resigned their commissions which was the honorable thing to do.

"I, _____, appointed a _____ in the Army of the United States, do solemnly swear, or affirm, that I will bear true allegiance to the United States of America, and that I will serve them honestly and faithfully against all their enemies or opposers whatsoever, and observe and obey the orders of the President of the United States, and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to the rules and articles for the government of the Armies of the United States."

Extra credit question. What slave states still existed after the surrender of the Confederacy?

I like discussion and discourse, but this group of for the most part awesome fellowship of boaters was joined by me for the discussion of boats... This shit should go to Facebook or whatever not continue on my favorite boating site. I love this platform for boat discussion.

Click on it, read it, don't click on it, don't read it.

Now surely you would agree, if you click on a post in a particular thread, in a particular forum, that you don't care for in the for in the first place, it seems odd that you would post in those type's of thread's multiple times? Asking for a friend.

Well as Mitch said, you are free to not read the things you don't like.

I truly hope that my post regarding my ancestry and gratefulness at being born in America did not upset you. It was not a slight to you or your wife. Everyone brings a different perspective to the table, and that was mine.

None taken, thank you.

Well, for me, I appreciate sharing opinions on this board. I could go to Farcebook, or Twitter, or some political discussion board. But I'm not a fan of social media and I find havens for political discussion are often quite vitriolic, to put it kindly. Most folks there don't seem to consider others points of view. They seem more interested in attacking rather than making strong arguments.

I like the crowd here. For the most part, I find these discussions to be polite, rational, and informative. I believe I can learn something from you folks; indeed I have. And I am hopeful that I might find a nugget of wisdom from time to time to share with you.

I'll do my best to be polite and civil. If I lose my grip, I hope I will have the character to apologize.

I’d have gone over and gotten some…I’d be in jail, he would have been walking the streets. I’d be a racist, he would be a hero.

Kiss my ass BLM, things are changing they just don’t see it yet

Hey guys, this is just an alternative thought but please just give it a moment to ponder and if you can't I totally understand... So, I'm not looking for any kind of confrontation here, this is just my perspective as a old white guy now married to a black woman who's great great grandfather was a former slave in the south... As black person can you take a moment and think about these monuments of honor to their racist past and how they might make you feel.... I'm not looking for a fight or to get beat up over this post, I'm asking for a moment of reflection. Thank you in advance for honoring my request.

Im considered brown, a minority, an immigrant. I’m not racist, not that most people really know the true definition of that word.

But to answer your question, no. Fuck no. If we bent to everyone’s sensitivity about injustice in the history of this or any country, and used that as the excuse to cancel its history, then we don’t have a country.

What amazes me about the indignation of blacks and the civil war is how they denegrate the sacrifices by so many soldiers who died for their freedoms.

Reparate that.

Careful. That’s a cancel culture attitude. No one forced you to read or comment on this thread.
Don’t like it, leave. Don’t agree, that’s ok too. But the second you complain about the topic and assert it shouldn’t exist because you don’t like it, you lose standing.

New Jersey one of the last to free slaves.

Did you know that today there are 19 states with constitutions that explicitly permit either slavery, involuntary servitude, or both as punishment for a crime?

Drove past the intersection today for the first time since all the drama earlier this week, statues gone, they've repaved, very strange.

El, A.P. Wasn’t family. My family never owned anyone. The one thing that did happen was the theft of our lands and boats. That’s war. To the winners go the spoils. Everyone lost something or someone. My kin made it from the Naval Yards on the Elizabeth River to his death at the Crater in Petersburg. I am very proud of my past, erasing it like it never happened won’t work it just fuels the fire. If the CSA is to be wiped off the history books, then so shall slavery. Which is what many have been taught as the cause of the war. Then what?

This bs must stop, black, white, browns….it must stop. We are human, not North or South or East or West for that matter. HUMAN.

Every race fought on both sides, free slaves had regiments on each sides.

NAACP is now after Gloucesters and Mathew’s monuments. If you think AP Hills monument was getting ugly, Mathew’s will make it look like a ice cream social. Both were voted on by the residents both were to stay. So now NAACP will be going against what the voting public approved. Good luck with that! It will turn out to be a flash point

^ agreed. What matters is attitude and character. Don't care what color your skin is or where you are from. I know to some it may sound like 'sweeping it under the rug' but the more it gets brought up the less likely it gets to the point of it 'not mattering'. I have met and known some black folks that I would much rather spend the day with than alot of white folks and alot of white folks I can't stand cause of their attitude and character

I agree.

I have been against the 'diversity' crap since it started. We do not become closer and in more harmony by celebrating how we are different. We find peace and harmony when we embrace how we are the same.

A former First Lady hinted what was coming saying

Barack knows we are going to have to change our conversation; we’re going to have to change our traditions, our history; we’re going to have to move into a different place as a nation
