We took a ride up the James River from Virginia Beach yesterday and the closer we got to Williamsburg, the browner the water got.

Since I have never been this far up the James River, is this normal or just the result of the rain we have had lately?

I boat on the James regularly with my father-in-law out of his marina in Chester, Va (near richmond). The water is pretty much always brown and muddy looking in that area.

It's brown...

Up past the ghost fleet it turns that color...

It's always brown, but due to the rain it's a faster moving brown with tree's in it!!

Glad to see some other users boating on the James. Yes it is brown, but does not bother me. Been swimming in it for 25 years. Guess the brown sediment settles at some point and cover up the Kepone.

I dock at Kingsmill and we usually head up to the Chick and anchor around Sheilds point or up to the Haven. The water is much better in the Chick.

What are the conditions like down your way? A group of us are heading to Hampton from Richmond over Memorial Day weekend. I'm hoping that the rest of the river doesn't have the debris we currently have.

Just out riding around this weekend from Kingsmill to Jamestown Island and did not notice any debris, maybe just confined to upper part of the river.

thanks for the info...we'll be at the Hampton Piers next weekend, should be a fun.

I live on Chisman Creek near the York River, and also noticed the water has been brown for the past couple of weeks. The tides are still running below average also...enjoy your trip, we're heading north to Deltavile for the w/end...regards!
