We're thinking of going up the Hudson in the Fall for about a week. Anyone have any good experiences up the Hudson that they could share? Marinas, towns, anchorages, restaurants?

Dave:

Are you doing the trip as part of a MM Getaway?

Dave, Rondout Creek (Kingston) is a great destination. The town has several nice restaurants. You can stay at the town dock (well, maybe a 500 would be a stretch). They have water and electric. The heads are in the town square so a larger boat with the facilities on board is a nice touch. There are also a number of marinas further up the creek but you need transportation (cab's) to get to town. The Hudson in the fall is a beautiful trip. We actually may be going in mid October with a fiend (yeah Gary, I actually have one) on his 400DB.

Member by the name of Red Stripe had some good info about the area also....sounded like a beautiful place

yeah, Hudson in the fall is GREAT. Roundout is nice, Catskill is nice. How far up do you want to go?

There are a couple of tricky spots, you'll want to study the charts if your chartplotter doesn't go up past Newburgh. Stay to the east of the lighthouse in the middle of the river before kingston.

One thing I noticed last year is that the leaves along the Hudson turn about a week later than everything else.

A trip up the Hudson is really beautiful. You may wish to consider Haverstraw Marina. It is a really nice one. You may wish to look on the eastern shore for Hyde Park marina. As I recall you can get to the Culinary Institute in Hyde Park from there by taxi and the food is incredible.

Across from Kingston is a town called Rhinebeck. They have air shows there but you might want to check the schedule at the Rhinebeck Aerodrome.

Enjoy your trip

OSD9 - No this is not a MM Getaway, although they should run one in the Fall. I'd be happy to go with a bunch of boats if others are so inclined.

I'm thinking of a long weekend of about 4 - 5 days. My teenagers are going back to school in a couple of weeks, but I'm always able to squeeze a Friday and Monday out of their schedule in the Fall.

MM isn't that adventurous. they like to cruise a couple of miles and call it a day.

let us know when you'll be going up and we'll do the same. i think we have about a 2 week window so we should be out about the same time.

just returned from a 18 day trip erie canal/hudson river. The Hudson is beautiful.. i agree with the Kingston stop..

If you are coming from the Jersey Shore, a good first leg stop might be the Half Moon Bay Marina. Just across the river from Haverstraw, the benefit to me is that there is NO fuel dock there or commercial services so that it is nice and quiet. There is water, electric and pumpout. HMB can handle a 50 with advance notice (I dock there). On the other hand, if you want one-stop shopping, Haverstraw is hard to beat.

About a 5 minute taxi ride from HMB is one of the best restaurants in Westchester called the Ocean House (27 for food on Zagat).

On your way, you can fuel up 5 miles across the river at Haverstraw, Panco or Minisceogo depending on wait times. These days, there is usually no wait for fuel at any of these places.

A decent lunch stop up from there that can handle a 50 footer is Torches just Southwest of the Newburgh bridge. Unless you want to make more distance in which case just keep the throttles down and head for Kingston. I agree that it is worth the stop.

The advice about keeping East of what appears to be a house in the middle of the river is A MUST. West of that house, the water struggles to be deeper than 1 foot at mean low tide.

Good luck.

Thank for all the input. I think we'll stop short of the canals and the draw to head up to Lake Champlain.

Dave

Note: No fuel at Minisceogo, they removed the pumps. Haverstraw is the best deep water marina in the area, and the new resturant and tiki bar is open. The food is good. Ships store and all other services available. The pool will be closed so that's not an issue.

Heed the navagation advice, up north you MUST stay in the channel and watch your charts and position. Have a great trip, the fall views are stunning.
