The Boat Pix choper got me!!

Well ok....... But they love me on Lake Martin so I must defend it..........
Maybe if you came down to the south end it would not be so "OUT OF THE WAY"

Got me 2 years ago. We were thrilled at the time. If you want to see the pix you have to reply. You don't have to purchase. They will send you the proofs for $25 to review which I did. They were great, touched up, etc. Instead of buying I took digital photos of the prints then sent them back. The photos were good enough for me and saved mucho $$.

Not the kind of activity I brag about. I'm cheap, but, a man has a right to make a living. Buy his product, talk him down, walk away - those are the only choices.

Another way to get the similar results is have some one take high quality pictures of your boat approaching, passing under and then out the other side from a bridge with a couple of trips might produce most shots for a lot less money.

Read my mind. I have quite a few awesome shots from other boaters as well!!

Was on the lake last summer during Aquapalooza. The Boat Pix chopper was out flying. To my surprise I get a E-mail from them today with about 10 photos of my boat.... But the price they want for photos is pretty high... Any one ever purchased photos from them and if so we they good quality?

Okay, I'll bite, how did they get your e-mail address?
Do the Aquapalooza organizers give out your info?

A few years back, I was offered a framed aerial picture of our home which is situated on rural acreage. Great shot, but I passed on their $250.00 fee. They rolled into my driveway a few months later with the same pitch. I countered with $100.00 FIRM and they accepted. I guess that they deduced that $100.00 was far more attractive than $ 00.00 so low ball them ... nothing to lose.

We had the Boat Pix Chopper take pics last summer - like everyone else, not about to send my CC number. To my surprise, about a week ago, I received an email with 10 proofs. They looked really cool - so I called, bought two 8x10s, with the shipping the charges were $180.00 Thought it was a once in lifetime opportunity to get a completely different angle of our boat

Maybe you could Photo Shop the water marks out of the proofs... :smt024

++1:thumbsup:

I personally started doing this awhile back with just about everything. I take a long at it, and say “Yea I like it, but the price is just too much for me” offer something less and see where it goes. If they say No, I figure well I did not need it that bad anyway!

I leased a Bell Jet Ranger about 15 years ago to shoot some video and the cost was $400 an hour just for the pilot and fuel. That included fly time to pick me up and drop me off. It was a contruction company I knew and they did it for their "cost". A friend of mine now instructs chopper pilots and he uses a MASH type helicopter (pretty bare bones) and charges about $400 an hour. It's also a hobby for him. He bought two and made one out of the parts! He's a FAA mechanic also. They use lots of fuel so I guess paying a photographer on top of that would get pretty costly. The liability insurance is also pretty high flying over water I'm sure if it's not already a special chopper with floats or inflatable emergency floats. You have to pay to play I guess. At a huge event like Aquapalooza I would think it would be a little more affordable. The bridge idea is great Gimme Time....we have one that would work, Mike.

I was hoping to see an answer to this question. If you're out on your boat cruising along, how do they find your contact info to get ahold of you?

I went to their website and entered my boats registration numbers. Then I gave them my credit card number and they mailed pics to me. I could send back if I didn't want them, but I was impressed with the quality, so i decided to buy. It was right before christmas and I was low on cash so I asked if they would bill my cc over the course of 3 months and they happily agreed.

I gladly paid for a picture. I could have my dad stand on a bridge with my $5k Nikon and $3.5k 300mm lens and take a picture of my boat - but I'm not sure he could even get the boat in the frame! Everyone thinks that since it is "just a picture" it's not worth anything and they should be given away free. The helo is expensive, the camera equipment is expensive - and the photographer is probably barely making enough to buy a meal for his family. Copying the pics without paying for them is STEALING.

I think that may be stretching it a bit. If they were not making a decent living they would not be doing it, plain and simple. Anyone can pay whatever they want for these pictures if they want them bad enough.

I think the point people are making is that it seems if they would make them a little more affordable they would probably sell more. That seems like quite a bit to charge for basically a "random" picture they took, as in, not being hired by an individual to take pics of a specific boat. If they don't sell them, they don't make a dime. I guess their strategy is working for them as they remain in business.

Several points here and this one is spot on! I am not sure I would be advertising on a global website that I am violating someone’s copyright. On the other site of the coin maybe the initial price of the pictures is too high for some people, but someone is paying for them. As you say they would not be in business if they are not making any money. As I said in an earlier post if the price is too high, then make an offer, they can always say no. Now if they take it, you both win.

Gunn,
If they get a pic of you - you will need to fill out a form on their website www.boatpix.com. You will need to include information like your registration numbers, type/color of boat, when/where and any other information that will help them find your boat. From that information, they will manually find your boat and send you pictures. They will require a credit card - but will not charge anything until you buy. If you don't buy - there is a $25 charge for the shipping/handling of the pics.
