The Big Tow From NC to Portland OR

One other note... if you fish, we are expecting the BIGGEST run of Spring Chinook Salmon within the next month. If you can get the boat wet in time you will be able to anchor and toss out the line for some amazing times.

It is a secret so don't tell anybody about the fish

The boat is now in Missouri until May/June. I do have my river boat with me, so a 20' Wooldridge (Wooly) with a 250 Evinrude jet work?

Should be there around the first part of April. Kings in Alaska have been weak the past few years. Sent a PM.

Tom, It was nice chatting with you.
You'll be just fine on the long haul. :smt001.

Tom, in your description of the trip, you stated your milage was 5.8. If you'll recall, I have an almost identical truck and have a '88 300SD and when I bought it on Lake of the Ozarks, I pulled it to Alabama on some of the same roads you were on. I put a Diablosport Power Programmer program in my truck, and when I installed the "tow" tune, I got 8.6 to 8.9 MPG pulling the boat. When not towing, I put in the 80HP performance tune and it really screams and will get 3-4 mpg better on the interstate. This would would make a huge difference when you make the rest of your trip.

doco, are you hand calculating the mileage? Most tuners will significantly distort the mileage the computer shows.

Tom,
Me and two Buddies:smt038 made the track from Richfield,Utah to Deal Maryland right befor Thanks giving 2009.Straight out I70
Hauled an empty 10' wide Boat trailer out and picked up
a 1983 Searay SRV270 30' and ran her back home to Utah 97 hrs round trip with no permit's any where just are wide load
Banners and we ran day and night.
I figured it would be easier to beg fogiveness then to ask permission:huh: and a hell of alot cheaper.
Blew a tire in Ohio a state trooper stopped and left some flares on the road and said have a good evening.:wow:
Just drive it like you been doing it your whole life you'll be fine.

Agree with the tuners affecting the mileage display - they typically adjust injector pulses which is what the factory computer uses to estimate your mpg. Which engine do you have - 6.0 or 6.4? The 6.4 can get drastically better mileage if you remove the DPF - but if they check for it in your area it will fail an annual inspection.

As this is a new truck, less than 12,000 miles, if I use a programmer chip the truck computer will pick it up and latch. When I take the truck in to get something fixed, they will see that and void my warrenty. :smt009

I am not very impressed with the 6.4. My 03 with a 6.0 got better fuel milage and seem to have more power.

What is the "DPF?" Is this the BS gate/exhaust filter on the exhaust?

It's Diesel Particulate Filter and yes - it's like a cat converter on a gas engine. The interesting thing on the diesels is the purge cycle which dumps fuel and has it basically burn the buildup in the filter out. The delete kits are essentially a straight pipe which bolts up in place - but you then need to program the truck to not do the purge cycle, etc. Mileage is increased in some cases by 25-35%! But - like you say - it can void your warranty so it's a toss up on what to do. Given the problems with the 6.0 and 6.4 is actually what led me to a v10 - repairs can be very expensive so having the warranty is a good thing. I think there is now an update to the programming from Ford which can be done at dealers which can help some and at least it's not aftermarket and a potential warranty risk.

Ahh, OK that thing. I noticed when the cycle kicked in, turbo pressure went to zero, there was significate power loss and fuel milage took a tank.............

The 6.4 really wasn't that bad - not near as bad as the 6.0 was previously. The early 6.4's did have cooling issues but most complaints were about the mileage which was horrible due to the DPF. I saw the 6.7 at SEMA and it is a monster motor - it's the first one Ford has completely designed in house and looks great. The 7.3 was in a league of it's own and was fantastic - but just couldn't keep up with the emission changes.

The Diablosport web site and forums state to always reinstall the original Ford program prior to service work. They state that the reinstall completely eliminates any trace of it being there as it erases any of the normal accumulated recent running menu that Ford's computers look for when there are looking for running problems or issues. The trick is to reinstall the original program several days before taking to ford so it will have a few days of accumulated data for the service computer to read.
I have had mine in 3 times for normal service and to have a turbo cleaned (under warranty- it was making a roaring noise when spooling down) and there was no issue with any nonford programming.
My 6.4 has been a good one for me. It pulls my 300SD like a champ. My previous 6.0 was a dog (dawg here in alabama) with rough running, EGR problems and bad transmission. It did however get better milage but I do think that is due to it not having the DPF.

I have a 7.3 in my F-250 and have had others you gotta love them.
Utah does not check the emmsions so we still run them free here.:smt038

Just got this in an E-mail from a buddy that is a service manager at a ford dealership. I'm still holding on to my 7.3 with 280K on her but this 6.7 might be my next one after the bugs are worked out. If you can't tow it with one of these you need to leave it where it is!!!
