The big old 80's 340 owners thread

Go to yorkdesignandfab.com (you can also find them on Amazon by searching for “stuffing box wrench” I think)
I got a 3 1/2 wrench for the shaft stuffing boxes on my 83 SVR 310 and love it. Was about $45 but is the perfect tool for the job. The other alternative is to cut the handle off an old pipe wrench (since they are too long to use in the area under your engines if you have V drives like I do) but I highly recommend York. Great people to deal with. If you order a 3 1/2” wrench and it is the wrong size they will swap it out as long as you can figure out the size you need.
Might not help but Algonquin marine cast sells expensive bronze ones that work like a champ

I have gotten great advice on this thread and I need some more. 1989 340 EC and I recently had to remove and have rebuilt the port motor. Just put it back in, got it timed, it’s running great. The mechanic put a “break in” oil that I’m supposed to use for about 10 hours then change the oil. I’m getting conflicting opinions on what oil to use after the break in period. The mechanic says 15w40, but NON synthetic. It’s impossible to find 15w40 oil for a gasoline engine, seems that it’s only made for a diesel motor. The motor is an gen 6 marine power from about 2006 with roller cam. I live in New Orleans so very hot, rarely gets below freezing. What is the best weight oil to use, will diesel oil be ok? Are the additives in diesel oil ok for gas engines? If not, what should I use? I want to get this right. Thanks in advance.

Hello just signed up tonight and been reading this thread for about 5 months. Excellent information and reading you guys have put together here. I have a new to me 1984 340 Sportfisherman, love the boat and I’m very familiar with vintage 340 and 390. My problem is I’m getting water under the mid cabin floor near the galley.
1. Water tank is empty, to rule that out
2. Aft bilge is dry
3. Water is on both sides of the center stringers
4. I cut access plates into the floor on both sides of center stringers and center hatch gives great access in middle, no water in middle.
5. I’m in brackish water so it’s very hard to tell if it’s fresh or salt
6. Been vacuuming out 5 or so gallons every few days
7. There are no Hull penetrations forward of the rear bilge engine room.
I’ve been looking in the bilges of a 340 Sundancer and a 340 sedan they are very different from the 340 Spirtfisherman. I think the bilge would be the same as a 340 EC. Any information would help. Thanks

I am following the comment from Sportfish above. Looking at one with similar issues. Galley floor is Very soft. Getting a survey but will take advice from anyone who has experienced with this. 1989 340DA Sundancer.

Thank you,

Found my problem when the boat was hauled for the season. 1 foot long crack dead center on the keel, under the fresh water tank. The hydraulic trailer scrapped hard against the boat on launch.

Any questions about the cabin sole in the 340 Sportfisherman let me know, it’s pretty simple and straight forward

Not a great answer but glad you found it. This 340DA is not taking on water but the galley floor and across to the dinette & entry is just really soft. Does anyone know what is under there or might anyone know if it necessarily need stringer repair or just a floor replacement?

Both the AC, and the water tank are under the port side dinette, at least ours was. If the AC condensate drain/hose, or seawater thru hull are leaking,it could cause water damage. Obviously, a leak in the water tank, or pump could be an issue.
Also, sometimes the fridge can leak when it defrosts, especially if you turn it off if empty.
If it’s a boat you want to buy, I would pass on it.
If it’s your boat, I would plan to redo the floor properly, since you REALLY need to get underneath it to be sure the stringers are ok, anyway.
Once you locate the moisture source, and remedy that, the onboard stringers should be the sides of the under floor storage area. Good luck

Thanks for the quick response. That's pretty much what I expected to hear. Looking at purchasing but have a surveyor scheduled. Just trying to get ahead of it.

Thanks again...

Does anyone have any pics of upgraded cabin lights/reading lights? Im changing the 4 in my cabin to LED but im just undecided on which style I want. Also replacing the rear half of the headliner. Trying to decide on a color for that. 88 340EC. Post pics of what you did. Thanks!

This looks amazing! I just bought a 1987 340 Sundancer and was wondering, what did you do with the A/C vent when you made that modification?
Welcome to CSR Cameron!

I'm pretty sure the picture is from a 340 Express Cruiser - different layout from your Sundancer and mine.

Agee, that's definitely an EC.
