The big old 80's 340 owners thread

Installed the new Refridgerator tonight now on the to the Garmin. I was thnking about what you said all day today. I didnt think about fishing it up top till you said that. Ill let you know how I get it there. I looked tonight and there is a black tri angeled panel in the cock pit starboard side. Its open to below and goes up. I hope this will do it. Up top I have two speakers I can remove to help pull the whire. I will start tomorrow night.

Wow Keith, kinda like me, was gone for a while. As I try to get the boat up and running again keeping up with the forums keeps me motivated and gives me new ideas (as if I need more things to do!)

Speaking of LED's, I put 2 LED panels in place of the broke up bilge lights. Haven't fired em up yet because there arn't any batteries in it to power em up.

Haven't been around in a bit. Anyone have any project pics? Love to see everyone's upgrades.

Anyone installed LED bulbs around the boat? Looking to do the cockpit & maybe some interior.

Somebody mentioned about the fenders on the bow obstructing the view ( williecoyote maybe) I have the same scenario. I thought I remembered seeing a mount for the larger bumpers for the swim platform. Any thoughts pros or cons ?

IMO unless you have an extended Swim platform then the large fenders would take up the entire area... and make the small factory one useless... just my 2c

Hypothetical Impeller Question:

On the 340 that I'm looking at the impellers were replaced in August of 2010.
After that, the boat got about 20 more hours of use before the boat was put into storage, where it resides today.

Q: How much do you trust the impellers?

Money to replace them is not an object (it's actually budgeted in), but I dont want to replace them if it's not needed.

Mike, they can be dried out and junk for sitting for two years. If it were me id replace them with new impellers and housings... 100 bucks is cheap insurance!

Thanks Jason - That not what I wanted to hear, but what I needed to hear!:smt038
Going to take one last look at her this weekend and then make an offer......

Au contraire - if the boat was winterized with pink, the impellesr would not be dried out. They may have taken a set but that's ok. I change mine after three seasons and about 140 hours and they are typically in very good condition (we boat is shallow water with lots of silt getting sucked in). See pix below for my last change...

HOWEVER, you must ask yourself - do you trust the maintenance records that were presented to you? AND are you sure the PO didn't run the things dry?

This was the worst aspect of the two (port engine)...

"...do you trust the maintenance records..." ----- I'm waitng for a copy of the receipt. We shall see.
There were very clean 'Serviced By Blah Blah Marine' Stickers on the risers.

Might just be safe and do this my self. Would you do the housings and impellers?
I'd do this my self so what costs might I expect to incure?

Thanks one and all for the input!

If you going to jacka$$ these impellers out, I'd change the housing too. I think the whole thing is about $90 each on B0ATF!X.C0M.
Here's the part number. 807151A14. Don't pay more than $65 for it! I had the marina replace one impeller for me years ago. I gave them the impeller and it STILL cost me $350.00.

$350 bucks Ron, Ouch! And yours are some what accessible... Mike I use seira impellers in mine from napa... never had an issue just an FYI

whoops. Just realized my contradictory prices in post # 92. The kit is $65 for Merc, a few bucks less for Sierra. I buy the OEM since I'm saving a bundle by DIY'ing.

Yeah, stuff's expensive here. It is not an easy job though. I can't blame them for the cost, but I prefer to not pay them all that money. That amounts to about 10 hours of running at cruising speed for me!

$350.00. - Wow
I think we are in the wrong bussiness.

For $130 for the pair, I'll tackle the job myself.

'

Jason, are you implying that this might not be the most fun thing I can do over a weekend

Maybe if our engines faced the right direction.....

"That amounts to about 10 hours of running at cruising speed for me!"

What are you guys eating for fuel (GPH) at cruise?
From what I've seen 25 to 28 is in the normal range.

And from the I never thought about that file .... Are all the fasteners english or metric on the mercuisers?

Mike, I won't spoil the exp for you... but let's just say unless you are a 10lb midget mechanic then yes it sucks... you have to stand on your head and pray you don't wedge yourself between the BB and the deck...

Mine were all english and I burn 25gph toatal for both 454s

All SAE fasteners.
Floscans tell me 30gph at 3300 rpm. They are obscenely accurate (unfortunately).

I just cant wait to see what gas at a marina is this summer

Took a final look at my potential 'hole in the water' yesterday - I'll most likely make an offer shortly.
As an update to the 'should the impellers get replaced question' - The boat has been winterized and in indoor 'unheated' storage
for the last two years with the impellers being replaced with only 6 running hours before the boat was put away
Should I just get spares or replace them? All opinions welcome!

There was one final question - What might this be?View attachment 24259

Its a clamshell style of cover I dont ever remember seeing somthing like this on another 340
or any boat for that matter:huh:
