The big old 80's 340 owners thread

I had a few of the F-7 sized fenders and they are huge. BUT, everyone always wanted to use em, and they were perfect for difficult situations. They both fit in the aft generator compartment as well.

Greetings Jason,

I'll most likley be putting a bid in on the 89 340 Dancer at the end of the month! I'm still saving the red rope lights for ya:smt043
So, I'm in full engineer mode - over analyze everything:grin:

A set of points belongs on the spares list as well.

As far as the fenders go, I'm just kinda debating with myself 8.5x27 or 10.5x30.....

Thanks Mike, good luck with your new love... I mostly have the 8.5s but every once in awhile wish I had larger ones. Does the 340 you're going after have a genny? This is where I store all of my fenders since I don't have one... good luck and keep me posted on how everything goes... where do you plan to keep her?

It does have the generator. I'm thinking if I can have four fenders in racks on the bowrails and a few more under the aft seat - should be plenty
She will be docked in downtown Cleveland near whiskey island or possibly in Rocky River, so if we feel like going out we can be on the boat
in 10 or 15 minutes. A final decision has not been made on that yet. Admiral and I are still mulling that over

We intend to get up to the islands 4 or 5 times a summer and sit out on the hook once in a while. Maybe more often if I can find some liquor stores
to knock over  28 GPH and a 2+ hour cruise right?

The best of luck Mike... be sure to keep the CSR get together in the back of your mind...

Not sure what year boat your looking at, but if it had Thunderbolt IV or newer ignition the only thing a point set would be good for is to chuck at nearby boaters to get them to tow you in.

You know it hurts when juice fly's out your nose... thanks Wilee...:smt043

Wilee,
If you are telling me I wont need a tach and dwell meter for this (1989) boat - you make me a VERY happy man!

Well good luck on the boat. Lots of stuff here on the site. Has the boat been sitting for a while? When was the last time the raw water impellers where changed? how are the cutlass? any play in them? check the rudder mount tops. On mine they were only steel and I replaced them with new stainless steel mounts.

No points in an '89 with Thunderbolt IVs, as Mark said above.
Lots of dancer owners complain that fenders on the bowrail obstruct their view. Not an issue for me but something to consider. I honestly don't know what size fenders I have (see pic below) but they do the trick in raftups.

The boat has been parked since October 2010 and has spent its winters inside. I have a request into the broker now
to get service information from the previous owners. There are service stickers on both engines from a local boat yard.

Oil changes on the engines and v-drives, cap and rotor, belts and fuel filter/seperator will all be done by the yard
that she is at if I buy her. As far as the cutlass bearings and rudder mounts go, that the surveyor will have to tell me.

I do appreciate the info about fenders on the bow raill possibly obstructing the view.
On the dancer, the helm is elevated about 10 inches over the express cruiser and I'm 6'3" so I might get away with it.
James, I see your fenders are up there - any issues?

Very happy to hear that there are no points in those distributors

It's good to have no points until a non-repairable electronic component goes out and there is no way to tweak it to work! Although that's one less yearly thing you will have to tune/check/replace/clean.

When I bought my boat it had (and still has) the fender holders on the bow rails with the fabric fender covers. I also found that they were very annoying to look around while navigating. My marina unfortunately is blockaded by crab pots when exiting into the river, the fenders make it difficult to spot them. I removed them and store them under the rear bench seat. If your out in the wide open it may not be an issue for you, for me they are a annoyance.

Hi guys Im new to my 345 Sedan Bridge. I need a new chart plotter and depth finder. Its a long run for me to pull the boat out so my question is....Do I need a through hull transducer? Is there wood in the hull of this boat? Thanks in advance!

Jeff

Jeff
Your boat has a solid bottom, as do all SRs with the HIN starting with SERF. You don't necessarily need a thru-hull transducer, but there's a certain way you need to mount the inside-hull transducer so that it reads accurately.

Good luck with your 345DB. Damn good lookin boat!

Thanks... Any tips on prep, epoxy, and location for transducer?

Jeff

I was looking into it at one point (I have an old but functional depth sounder but wanted to get the one built into the plotter going). If you check websites of manufacturers (like Garmin) and look up their interior transducers, there's step by step instructions and recommendations which are specific for their product.

Exactly what I have going on. I will let you know how it goes! Thanks for the help!

Jeff

I just picked up the Garmin 740s and an Airmar in hull transducer. I will have the play by play for you this week as I try to put it in my self. Directions look easy. We will see.

Jeff
take pix, I'm intrigued. Also interested in how you'll fish the wire down to the bilge from the bridge.

Haven't been around in a bit. Anyone have any project pics? Love to see everyone's upgrades.

Anyone installed LED bulbs around the boat? Looking to do the cockpit & maybe some interior.
