The big old 80's 340 owners thread

Hey gents, new hear and looking at some old Sea Rays for a family boat. Looked at a 390 but too moist for me. We also seen a 1988 340 dancer that we want to take a closer look at. Was looking for any advice as to issues those gen boats had that I can put a keen eye to. Also the owner says the boat has no ac as in never did. I found that strange. Wondering how much we will need it as we are planning to sleep on it over weekends here at marina in Lake St Clair.
any info is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Does anyone know how to remove the icemaker in a 1989 340 DA?

Mine had already been removed when I bought the boat. I replaced it with one that I found on ebay and it is just held in by a mounting flange that screws in to the face frame of the cabinet.
You might have wood trim covering the steel flange that you would need to remove first.

I have to pull my icemaker out this week to replace the fan motor.

(Sorry if this is a bit late...)

IMHO You will need the AC. When we leave the boat, we shut the ac down and just leave a small fan running with some 'Damp Rid' containers throughout the cabin to help keep the humidity down. I have a little temperature/humidity gauge in the cabin and its not uncommon to see it above 90 degrees when we come aboard in the afternoon.

I am honestly a bit stunned there is no AC aboard the 340 you are looking at.

Go through this thread and you will pretty much get the good, the bad, and the ugly of late 80's 340's

I'm not sure if I'm posting this question correctly- if I'm not I'm certain one of you guys can tell me where to go, er how to post correctly! 1985 340 Sundancer. Starboard shaft seal leaks. The mechanic where I keep the boat " adjusted" it but still leaks. He tells me that you have to pull the engine to replace it. I can reach it with a bit of streatching and the replacement process looks straightforward. I can gather all of the tools necessary to do the work if it is possible. Have you done this job? Pitfalls? The boat is on blocks 400 miles from home so I need to plan ahead a bit. Thank You!

I see much alcohol and/or recreational pharmaceuticals in your future. The job is R rated for foul language.
Somewhere in this thread, I think it was Wileycoyote that posted an entire procedure for this on his 340 express.
Same procedure but he had good access to his seals where you dont.

I actually think I book marked this.

Here you go!

Thanks Northshore, maybe an application of medicinal alcohol each time I get my head above the deck again will help! Trying to link to the post but it keeps telling me I'm not authorized...... I'll try a search from the home page, the post sounds helpful.

Its under the technical articles secion

Thanks for your response. I already removed the wood trim and there is nothing holding the ice maker from the front, nor any holes to indicate there may have been any bracket in the past. Using an inspection light it appears there is a 2 x 4 across the top at the back and the unit is wedged between this and a second piece of plywood in the cabinet base. I cannot move it one iota by tugging. I am now wondering whether this is a job for the winter when the boat is out of the water and on stands so that the hull relaxes to relieve the pressure! Is the base of your cabinet formed with one or two sheets of plywood? Do you have a 2 x 4 across the top of your cabinet at the rear?

Im starting to have flashbacks
Are there screws going into that 2x4 from the drawer area above!?
And if memory serves, that thing was jammed in there tight.

Ok, for the ice maker removal.

There are 3 screws accessible through the drawer opening above the icemaker - remove them. (stubby screw driver required)
Turn the AC power off on the boat and remove the outlet next to the icemaker below the sink.
the 2x4 that the screws from the drawer were screwed into should just barely be visible through the outlet opening
I had to drive mine out of position with the the butt end of a hammer. Once it is loose, you should be able to grab it though
the top drawer opening under the sink.

Does anyone happen to know what series Sealand vacuflush heads came in our boats?
I broke the little plastic foot pedal that snaps on to the flush lever....

Finally got some decent pics of my "backwards" interior

Ya know Jim.... you say backwards but the one thing I never liked about the 340s was there was nowhere to sit but on the bed, in the aft cabin or at the dinette. (Yeah, there is the head but my wife hated when I sat in there and left the door open to talk with her) Your boat does have that small settee. But it comes at a scarifice. The later models have a nice galley and huge forward berth.

On mine there are three 3" screws under the trim on the right side of the ice maker. There are actually 4-5 screws but only the top 3 were holding the unit in. Then two more screwed in to the bottom (behind access panel) and 2 more screwed in to the left side in front of the evap coil. It was never coming out on its own !!
