Can anybody help a newbie with the glossary of affectionate terms for spouses/significant others, and anybody else we should be addressing most nautically? I gather that "the admiral" typically is a wife, but what else is out there? In my limited time as a boat owner, my boyfriend has accepted quite readily--and proudly, I might add--his title of First Mate to my Captain.

But are we missing the boat on anything else that's fun?

Good to see he made First Mate. I thought he might just be a Deck Hand, ha

This could be fun, given your non traditional roles. Maybe in your best Charles Laughton imitation you could shout "Mister Christian!" anytime you need his attention.

i refer to my wife of 30 years as first mate, but every once in a while - just in jest - I remind her that there might a second mate someday. More frequently she is referred to as admiral, best mate, the owner, or the lady of the yacht.

I know I should us Admiral......but most often it's Darling, yes darling, no darling, I'm doing it now........, it's ok I'll do it.....

We always refer to the person in the water helping us to anchor at the sandbar as our "Dock Boy", or "Coxswain". Any one else on board who must handle lines, bumpers, etc. when docking is simply "The Crew".

My wife chose her own term of endearment....."Galley Wench". That's why she's always referred to as GW on forums.

Actually, he uses that term, too, when he's tackling projects. One day he texted, "I think I'll take tomorrow afternoon off work and go wash the canvas." *swoon* So I rarely call him anything less than First Mate!

We have a Second Mate, too--a mutual friend who's been a quick study on launching, mooring, and slipping. She'll be on duty Sat for Girls' Day on the lake!

We have "boat butlers"--people who spend nearly 100% of their time floating in the water rather than lounging on the boats. They mind the smaller craft like bass boats and PWCs that we don't always tie to the main line of boats.

I like the Galley Wench option, too!

My wife loves the term SWMBO, but I am the Captain... Wife is usually the First Mate. Kids and dog are crew. Friends are pasengers...

here's how we man our ship.

sometimes I do refer to my son as Gilligan, then he calls me skipper, then I drop it.

Heck--I think I'll start using SWMBO on land!

You are the Admiral and he is the "Boat Boy" with a temporary promotion to captain at your discretion. And there is no extra pay for the promotion!

Actually, Tim's pic made me remember my First Mate's other title, which I'm putting on a t-shirt as soon as we apply the boat name. Boat = If You're Lucky; First Mate = Lucky. (Might be funnier if he'd tattoo it on his tush, but I doubt he'd find that thought as amusing as I do!)

Snicker what????

I'm Captain, the wife is Admiral, the teenager is Crew, and the dog is "First Mate Underfoot".

My wife gets mad when I introduce her as my first wife. Not sure about "first mate".
