While stopped for the Wrightsville Beach leg of the 650FLY’s tour up the east coast, Capt. Rusty and the 650 had a surprise and very special guest this weekend. Some of you newer members might not know why this is so special for several of us. Here is the background:

Back in 2011, one of our members, Robin Byers (rabyers1), received news that no parent ever expects yet dreads. His 3 year old son, Benjamin, was diagnosed with Leukemia. We learned about it in sort of a “good-bye” post where Robin explained his anticipated absence from the forum as the Byers family sought treatment for Ben. Thanks to great care received at Duke Children’s Hospital, Ben was in remission in a very short period of time, but was facing a lengthly course of chemotherapy. Our friends at Sea Ray who keep up with CSR were aware of Ben’s situation. The end of his hospital stay roughly coincided with Sea Ray's scheduled Yacht Expo, so Benjamin and the Byers family were invited to attend and to enjoy the new yachts and to ride on and drive as many as they cared to. It was a great weekend for all of us involved. Here are some photos of the weekend at Sykes Creek in 2011:

Now, at 4 years after his diagnosis, Benjamin is a healthy happy completely normal kid enjoying life as big brother to little brother Brody and (new) little sister, Sloan. The Byers family, Benjamin, Brody, Sloan, (Dad) Robin and (mom) Kim stopped by to see Rusty in Wrightsville Beach this weekend:

Please take a minute to look at both. They will not only bring a tear to your eye, but you will also gain an appreciation for the nightmare fighting a disease like A.L.L can be for those around t he child. YOu will also gain an appreciation for the quality of company who built your boat as well as the character of the employees who have been involved in the Benjamin Byers story. Thanks to Kim and Robin for letting us tag along, through thick and thin, and watch your kids grow up.

Thanks for sharing Frank. What a great story and outcome.

Frank, I remember reading your original post regarding Sykes Creek. And now this.... These are the behind the scenes corporate situations that never get the attention they deserve. Unfortunately these stories never make the brochure or the general customer base. Kudos Rusty.

I know his family is on this forum and I remember when this happened a few years ago. God bless that little boy and his family and I'm so glad to see he's doing so well!! Thanks for sharing the update.

I read this while on my deck watching my 8 year old grandson kicking a soccer ball around in our yard with his Dad. My 5 year old grandson is downstairs playing while their Mom gets the 10 month old to sleep.

When I read this, went through the links and read Frank's post, I realize how fortunate we are that our own kids and, now grandkids, are healthy. I can't imagine the stress and risk of loss in those parents' heads. Both they and the whole family are to be admired for their strength.

Great post Frank.

Mark

Thanks Frank and Rusty for this post. I do remember reading about Ben and what a thrill for him (and Rusty) to meet up and check out a cool boat. What an inspiring story! Stay strong young man,new need the next generation of Sea Ray Owners to learn how to do it right. Where better than from Mr. Sea Ray himself!

timing is such an interesting thing, just last Friday we attended the SW Ohio LLS Grand Finale for their Man & Woman of the year campaign. AS a group the 13 outstanding individuals raised....570 Thousand Dollars, and adding in the results last month from Dayton area chapter, Southern Ohio raised just over 1.1 million dollars to aide the continuing economic need for research so that a cure is found and children like Ben, and their families one of these days in the not too distant future won't have to go thru what this family does. Blessings to Ben and his Family....

Couldn't finish reading it all, my eyes got too misty.

I'm glad to hear Ben is doing well. :smt038 and cool pics.

Best wishes to the Byers family. Great news on the outcome.

Frank, great post. Nothing more to say.

Rusty...well, thanks for being Rusty. Rest assured that all of us on CSR and your extended Sea Ray family appreciate what you do, even if the folks at Brunswick fail to let you know.

This is an inspiring post. Rusty, Frank - thank you for taking the time to let us know how Ben and his family are doing. My wife is also a cancer survivor (Leukemia), so this strikes close to home for us. Ben, we'll see you out on the water!

Dale

What a great outcome to a scenario that could have had a much worse conclusion. Excellent post and follow up Frank. And what a nice way for Sea Ray and Rusty Higgins to be able to show a little guy the ropes on a big Sea Ray. Ben won't soon forget that experience.
