Termperature Gauge

It gets "heat stuck" over time. Most times they rip when you take the housing off. I always put them on dry, though. But if those two contacts aren't making a good... well... contact... then you might be getting a weak or erratic signal to the dash gauge.

ok, thanks. I'll stop and grab another gasket this weekend and then peel the old one, clean the housing and block surfaces and try the new gasket. I'm confident it's something that's really simple to fix, which is why I'm too stubborn to take it to the shop. I just can't figure out what it is.

It was mentioned above, but have you measured the resistance at the sender with an ohm meter? You might have to buy some tools if you want to do some real self diagnosis - but then, when is it a bad thing to buy tools? You really need to think about this from a "narrow down the variables" standpoint. If you're getting good resistance readings, then check at the gauge. If you're not getting good readings at the sender, then the issue is at the sender (or behind). It's actually a pretty easy thing to diagnose once you look at it from this perspective.

Hi, I know this post is old but I’m having a similar issue and was wondering if you ever fixed the issue? Would you mind sharing what was fixed? Thanks

I had to replace the thermostat on my starboard engine so I went ahead and replaced it on my port engine as well. Before I did the port engine stat the guage always read 170 at running RPM's. Since I replace it the guage is about 180 to 185. The starboard guage runs around 175. With a heat gun at the housing it is 160 on both engines. Why would the guage read different after changing the thermostat?
