Was looking at replacing my water temp gauge and oil pressure gauge on my 215 SR Express Cruiser 1996 model. 5.7L with 2 brrl carb. Alpha 2 outdrive. Will an off the shelf gauge from west Marine work?

Those are obviously pretty important gauges. I would also replace the 23 year sending units with the mates to those new gauges.

+1....not all gauges work with all senders. They need to be mated.

Check Sea Ray Parts.com first. They may have a match to your current gauges if that matters to you.
I replaced one of my temp gauges with an exact match from them last month because of a cloudy lens. It looks exactly like the rest of the 2002 gauges in my dash.

Does the sender have the type sender # stamped into it so you can match the gauge with it?

Ed. Had the same problem. If you have the serial number from the motor any good marina or marine parts store with a computer can give you the proper sender. I Have a 88 sorrento with a 5.7 and thought i was always running hot. Got a lazer and found gauge was wrong and just reading high. Pulled sendor and whent to get a new one. Found the one that was in there was wrong and just by checking by the motor numbers was given the proper one. Now gauge and lazer are on point

Checked tstat today and found that I did not have an Oring under the stat so I put one in and cleaned all connections that make the ground. Ran on the hose for about 20 mins and only got to 175 with a 160 stat in it.

Ran the a few days later and was still getting 195 on the gauge while under a load. So with that I ordered a new oil pressure gauge and temp gauge since the originals were 23 years old and looking shabby. Now while running on the hose the temp only gets to 150 with the new gauge at 1000 rpms. Have not run under a load yet. The engine still has the 160 stat in it. I am betting I had a bad gauge.
