I own a 1989 Sea Ray 180 CB with a Mercruiser 3.0L engine in it, Alpha One drive. The steering has become really stiff during last season and some reading around here pointed to the steering cable needing to be replaced. My mechanic confirmed this, but he also said he couldn't find spare parts for a steering system that old. I'd like to try the wisdom of you guys too.

The steering is a Teleflex rack and pinion, but it's impossible to read the cable number that's supposedly printed on the cable 2-3 inches from the helm. Does anyone know the part number, OEM or original, I should be looking for on eBay/Amazon/somewhere else and what length it should have for my 18' boat?

Thank you!

Man, I am in the same boat except my Sea Ray is a 1998 180 BR. Its kind of hard to see the part number unless you pull the steering cable all the way out. From the research I've found, Teleflex was bought out by a company called Sea Star. How long is your cable? If you know, where did you get the information because I would like to know as well. I've read in some places that it was 15 1/2 feet long and other places it says it's 16 feet long....I'm lost! hahha

[h=2]Technical Reference Manual[/h]

[h=2]How to Measure Mechanical Steering Cables[/h]
[h=3]"Measure Twice. Order Once."[/h] [h=3]Replacement of Existing Cable:[/h]If possible, find the part number stamped on the plastic jacket of the old cable. If you removed the old cable, measure for the replacement cable as follows:

[h=4]For Rotary Steering Cable Replacement,
Measure Existing Cable as follows:
[/h]Measure plastic cable jacket ("Y" dimension, shown in above drawing) in inches, add 18", and round up to next foot. Order that length cable. [h=4]For Rack Steering Cable Replacement, Measure Existing Cable as follows:[/h]Measure plastic cable jacket ("Y" dimension shown in above drawing) in inches, add 30", and round up to next foot. Order that length cable.

Thank you Bt, I'll try that. Please excuse the late reply, I thought the forum would notify me when I had replies, but turned out it didn't..
