I'm tired of trying to keep my swim platform clean. I was thinking of covering with spaced teak. Thoughts, concerns? Any advise would be appreciated.

Cost and custom fabrication challenges aside, to keep teak looking nice will require more work than simply wiping the platform down with an all-purpose cleaner and rag.

If you simply want to cover it up with something, how about having a piece of carpet made and just snap it down. I'll let you make the call on whether or not that would be considered more cleaning.

The problem is the parking lot at my marine is black topped. The moment someone steps on the platform foot prints are left behind. Plus the deckhands leave a lot behind moving the boat in and out of storage. I have access to very cheap material cost and free labor. Plus I thought it might look nice, but I see your points. thank you

I looked into and spoke with several people about faux teak but for $3k estimate... I went with our friends online here with us snapincarpet.com and for $297 I got upper and lower swim steps covered in carpet....

Im a new boater and anticipated what your saying and ordered a OEM Dunes Ferber with Aqua Trac backing with the Heather Beige Sunbrella binding for my swim platform...it will look nice when its laid down....

I was thinking of mounting the four inch wide pieces of teak spaced about a half inch apart over the fiberglass platform I can puchase the 5/8" teak for a hundred dollars.

Heat might be a factor to consider in the summer... You'll burn bare feet.

OK, so the main problem, if I understand you correctly, is keeping it clean while it's in the yard? Wouldn't the teak still get dirty?

I'm not saying this to push the carpet idea on you... but a piece of cheap, outdoor carpet (or even some scrap canvas) and a few snaps would probably solve the problem. Heck, you could probably even make it work w/o installing any new snaps. Use some existing snaps and properly placed bungees, for example. Just take the carpet off before you go boating.

If done right, the teak could certainly look good, though.

My carpet goes down while at rest and are stowed while under way.... No snaps needed with the rubber backing.

Thats what I do as well. Mine is on the swimdeck to primarily keep the spider crap off of it. For some reason, that is the area most likely to get pelted. While the smooth gelcoat is no problem to clean, the non skid can be very difficult if left uncleaned for a a length of time.

I simply take mine off and leave it on the dock when I leave.

Just curious on this one, but you guys that just lay the carpet down when you leave the boat... aren't you worried about it blowing away? Or, does it really stay put that good?

It's got to be one hell of a blow to pull up 14' x 1' (upper step) and 14' x 2.5' (lower step)........ Carpet with rubber backing is not exactly light.

My thought was the teak wouldn't show every foot print like the white swim platform. I'm afraid a light colored carpet would do the same and would hold water. I also think it would look great. I did not think about the heat, or simply using a cheap carpet or mat and stowing it while under way. Thank you for your help. I plan to order new snap ins this spring and I just might add the plat form.

Never a problem here Dennis. I am in a covered slip with lots of boats around me to break the wind though.

It would take a good blow to move it at all.

thats true about footprints on the swimdeck, but it is just a part of boating for me (and it does bug me). If you use a full time carpet, then you would have to deal with the blow holes in the platform..right?

Or do you plan to use it only while at rest or dockside?

What are those blow holes for anyway???

Thanks, Mark and Mike. From your experience, and guesstimating the size of the carpet that the OP's would be, do you think his could blow away? I have to admit, I'm wondering a little bit about this for my own use.:smt001
