Teak Restoration

Jason, I owned a '79 26 Express with pretty much the same teak arrangement. You should probably shoot some 4200 into the screw holes during ther re-install to keep water out of the forward deck or any place you are attaching to fiberglass. There is probably coring in the deck. Looks good. SBW

Ooooh..good idea, Thanks! Do you have any pics of your old boat? If so, shoot em to me at brains646@yahoo.com. I'm always looking for different ideas for layout. I need to raise my helm seats but dont know if I want to go to a pedestal or just build a box to set my current lounge seats on. Pics always help.

Jason,

Last year was our first also. the farthest south was just past the MacAurthur Bridge, and north to the Clinton River. I do hope to be a bit more adventurous this year. Also hoping for some relief in gas prices to help me here!

I here the walleye fishing is pretty good in your area? do you fish much?

Good to hear there are more Great Lakes CSR's.

Keep up the good work.

SBW1, You planning any trips to the sunrise side of the state?

Jason,

When you do plan on coming up this way, send me a p.m. We'll see if we can get together.

We were in Lake Huron last year for an organized event for Tiara. That activity will be held in Charlevoix this year so we will probably hit Harbor Springs and boat around the north end of the lake this summer and stop at Charlevoix on the way back. How about yourself? SBW

It sounds like we are in the same......uhhh....boat. LOL. I dont fish much but my neighbor does and yes the walleye fishing is UNREAL. In less than 5 mins I can be in a spot where we can handline troll for about an hour and come home with 10-12 real good sized fish. Right now its ridiculous how many fisherman are out. I just dont get into it as much as a nice cruise with some tunes.

I'll definitely hit you up when I head your way. I plan on taking an "expedition" up to St. Clair and the Clinton river not long after I put in. Have you ever been to the "Cruise on inn" ? Its a nice little bar/restaurant on the clinton. I've been there by car but plan to go by boat this year. Also Sinbads is really good if you like seafood and wednesdays are all you can eat prime rib. So mark it down, you'll be seeing me!

Hi Jay:

I'm very impressed not only with your craftsmanship, but your pride and perseverance in wanting to restore a classic Sea Ray.

Please keep us posted as you progress as you'll be an encouragement and example to us all to get with our own programs!

Jay I had so much teak on on sail boats in my former life ... I miss it I truely do. I don't miss the work, but I sure miss the warmth and feel.

Jason,

Yes, we've been to Sinbads a couple of time via water. Thanks for the Prime Rib tip!

Also, My son and I went to Crew's Inn via water. The trouble there is docking (or lack there of). You might end up waiting awhile until someone leaves (unless your timing is impeccable). I couldn't believe it when they had Filet Mignon on the kids menu! Guess what my son had?

In the river, it can get a bit tricky if the wind and the current are going in the same direction, with heavy boat traffic.

See ya on the water!

SBW1,

Probably will not make it to lake Huron, or Lake Michigan by boat. I'm not sure that 1) My skippering skills are up to the task, and 2) my boat would be able to handle some of the seas that whip up in a hurry. I sure would hate to get caught in something far from safe harbor!

While on Mackinac Island last August, we spoke with a ragboater for a bit at the marina. At this point my sons looks at me and says "Why don't we come up here on the boat?" Yeah, great idea. I'll think about it.

There are some really nice lakes that dump into Lake Michigan on the west side of the state. We see lots of people trailering boats smaller than yours over here for a little change of venue. Going to Mackinac Island would be risky for you, but there are many other lakes you could enjoy from Harbor Springs south to Indiana. You should look at a map. If you have any questions, I'd be happy to share some experiences. We've been in every port from Chicago to St. Ignas, plus the major ports in Wisconsin. Another option for you is the Cheneaux (sp?) Islands just east of Mackinac Island. It's very protected and is a small, wooden, boat mecca.

sbw1,

You bring up a good point on trailering to points of interest. we have camped (prior to owning the boat) in Muskegon. Muskegon Lake is nice, with a outlet to Lake Michigan. I know there are others. I'm just not ready to do that just yet. There is still lots to explore in my neck of the woods.

I do appreciate offer to share your experiences/advice. Thank you!

Thanks for the props. This is my second boat but I only had the first one for a few months (86 SR Seville) before I got my 260. I'd never really seen what teak could look like until I saw a 64 Marinette Aluminum Hull that had an entire deck, bulkhead and helm station made of teak. The person restoring it had taken his time and DEAR GOD it was beyond beautiful. I could look down on it from the dock (at least 5 feet above the deck) and see myself clear enough to shave. Now, I wont get to that point but I do want the part of my boat that is most unique to stand out and be appreciated by skippers and landlubbers alike. So thats my motivation. It is work though. Kinda like laying sod, not hard but damn tedious.

Nice work Jason. Great looking teak makes the boat look so much better. I did the same thing this winter with all the teak in the cockpit of our '89 340. I naturally think it looks better but I have been getting great comments from the marina neighbors, too.

The funny thing is they will ask what's different on the boat. They know it looks better but they can't figure out why.

As for the platform, I had a teak platform on my '85 Cobalt and keeping it looking good was a constant battle. I finally gave up on the varnish and just used the chemical cleaner and brightner and then oiled the crap out of it. It didn't look better but it was sure easier to do. If you want to consider replacing it, go to www.swimplatforms.com. They do awesome work. I have one on my 340.

Hey guys,

I just wanted to post a few more pics of my progress. I've gotten both the engine hatch and the battery hatch done and they really add to the look of the deck. I took a pic with both pieces installed with an older piece in the middle to show the difference. Let me know what you guys think. I hope to get her in the water this weekend so I'm trying to get this done. Everything else I need to do, can be done in the slip.

Jay

Man, that looks great! I'll take teak over carpet anyday! Especially when it can be removed and stained OFF the boat and then dropped back in. That makes maintenance so much easier. That is one nice looking floor! Thanks for the pictures!

Oddly enough, those two hatches were the largest but easiest pieces I restored. The others were small and had lots of nooks that I had to deal with. These were pretty easy. I'm probably gonna take the engine hatch off and add some grip sprinkles to it so that it wont be so slippery if it gets wet.

Your point is well taken!

The results are spectacular!

And yes, I would like to see your hard work first hand. Just need to get the boat in the water!
