teak decking on a 420/44 sundancer

I've been looking at teak for my cockpit and steps for a couple of years. I can't justify the costs to do it right. 3 estimates - all between $16-19k.
I looked into Flexiteak. While it is a quality product and I have seen some installations that were very attractive, it's not for me. It was 2/3 cost.

Teak looks great but needs to be maintained. No just washing it down and mopping up like a fiberglass cockpit floor. I just purchased a 48Da and opted OUT of the full teak package (helm to swim platform) and wanted it just in the helm area under the shade of the hardtop. Reason: Knowing me, I'd be scrubbing like a crazy cleaning lady (is that PC?) every Saturday just to get the sunbleached teak back to golden color and that is not condusive to putting quality engines hours on her. I've gotten to the point of stowing the cockpit snap in carpets, and when on board leaving the canvas off. If it rains over night, well it's a boat and it gets wet, you mop and then your done. No wet carpets to hang over the rails.

A friend with a 370EC did his cockpit with teak plywood........the top ply is teak and the others are an imported non-rotting wood. It was a little cheaper than teak but more than man made teak knockoffs like Flexiteak. The problem with any, however, is the cost of a quality installation. Home Depot's floor guy is not the call to make for this one. On the 370EC (huge cockpit w/14' beam), the cost of materials was $3500 and installation was $7000.
The cost may not be a deterrent, but having had 3 boats with exterior teak, I can tell you that this is not a change I would make. Initially, you will have a one of a kind, but after monthly teak cleanings (serious scrubbing, not "hose-off" kind of cleaning) with acid and neutralizer, you will be sick of your unique floor.

Just out of curiousity, does Flexi Teak have to maintained like regular teak does or is it pretty much maintenance free? :huh:

I've got flexiteek on the swim platform and HATE it. It gets WAY TOO HOT on bare feet. It does provide great non-slip, as opposed to textured gelcoat. It's likewise zero-maintenance. It tends to look more gray than tan. I would never EVER get it in the cockpit, you'd have nowhere to escape burning your feet (yes, it gets THAT hot).

Clean weathered natural teak is gray..............
As far as fish blood and juice, the guy with the 370EC does fish it every week and he buys Chlorox by the case and expends a lot of elbow grease.
