Good morning -

Last several years one of the tachometers is "sticking" and goes back to normal after tapping the cover of the unit. Once back, the syncronizer is also off a bit. Never know which to trust. When the tacs are identical, the sync is now off a bit...and vice versa. Is there a way to possibly lube and or adjust these units? Thanks in advance.

Mike

I dont know what era your boat is but I know the tachs from my era (90's) have sticking issues. I have read that you remove the panel & on the back is a screw switch that reads 4,6,8. Turn it back & forth a few times & it is supposed to clear the sticking/jumping problem.

Thanks. Will give it a try

I have found that sometimes moisture builds up in the gauges too. Leave your nav lights on (or dash lights if they are on a separate switch) while running the boat (don't forget to turn them off) and it helps keep them dry from the bulb heat.

Great idea. Thx.

FYI: The 4, 6, 8 refers to the number of cylinders of your engine. Don't forget to set it back to the appropriate number.
Ha! I just saw that on another thread. Thx. Are you aware if there is an adjustment on the back of the syncronizer? I've seen a pic of the back of the unit online (I'm not presently at the boat) and I haven't been able to determine what all of the labels are. I see port and starboard ( I believe...old eyes here) and wasn't sure if there was an adjustment knob. Thx.

I am not aware of an adjustment of this kind. I have always trusted it on my boat. To make any adjustments of this sort, I would think that you would need to verify that the tach reading corresponds with the engine output rpm's on each engine. This seems like a major task. Now you are talking about recalibrating your tach readings. $$$$ Getting way too complicated. I would trust your synchronizer and that will probably get you close enough.

Agreed. Thanks.
