Our Systems Monitor will occasionally beep for an instant at speeds under 10mph. When cruising at planing speed we will hear a frequent alarm that only lasts an instant. When we tried to see what the alarm was it required we record a video of the displayed message and then go through the video frame by frame to read the message. The message varied from port engine heat to front bilge alarm to starboard engine heat to..., etc. Almost certain this is a ground wire short causing the problem. Explained this issue to a marine service shop and that was their conclusion but since we were traveling they could not get us in for repair timely.
Possible Solution? There are 3 wires coming off the SM. Could I run another ground wire to the existing ground to solve the problem? Or is it possible there is a short in one of the other two wires because when I was wiggling the wires I heard the heard the alarm and got a “No Data Link” message?

No data link is the coax connector. I would re-terminate that connector.

On a scale of 1-10 I’m about 2+/- in terms of electronics knowledge.

Re-terminate that connector? Does that mean replace the coax cable connector on the end I was wiggling? Would replacing the coax cable accomplish the same?
