any thoughts on the best approach to fixing this situation? The hatch can barely close.

Remove it and replace with a clean, new piece.

when you say "a new piece", any idea what that is? How do I go about getting a new hatch gasket? Thanks in advance.

Katemma, what is that "swollen" with? What is making it swell? That edging has no wood or porous-type material that would swell. From the picture, it looks like a lot of mold may have caused it? If that's the case, be sure you check around other areas of the boat and "remediate" any mold you find... health-wise.

interesting. It looks like insulation that had gotten wet and I assumed it swelled but maybe it is mold. I just bought the boat and the compartment was full of gear and closed off so it wouldnt surprise me if it were mold.. thanks for the heads up. Spraying bleach a good idea?

Bleach just whitens - doesn't kill the mold. There are a number of products that'll kill mold available at your big box stores.

I would beg to differ with you, bleach will kill mold that it comes in contact with-http://blacktoxicmolds.com/bleach-kill-mold.php

Have used it in many applications over the years very successfully. However, like everything, there may be a better solution available.

At this point, you'll be removing/cleaning/replacing so spraying it with anything is sort of a moot point. From the picture, it appears to be just a simple edge guard - these are vinyl with metal inside it to create the spring tension to keep the edge guard secured. That's all there is to this stuff. I'm not sure what you mean by "insulation" - maybe there's more to this than what I'm seeing in the pic? There could be some caulk/sealant used to help keep the edge guard in place.
