Good Morning! My swim platform (sides) have been peeling and chipping off. It is purely cosmetic but bothers me. I do not want an elaborate fix. Can someone recommend a fix? Perhaps an idea to cover up? Thanks in advance!

Covering it might be a bit obvious given the location. But if that's what you'd prefer, perhaps pick a 3M film and go for it.

I've bought 3M films from these guys before. Big selection, good service:

How's the health of the rest of the swim platform?

Are those the only defects?

The swim platform on LDII has been used as a water brake throughout the years I wish it only had a few cracks in/on it.

Interesting that they shot paint over the fiberglass. I'm sure it is epoxy based paint if you look at the thickness but it does not appear to have strong adhesion to the fiberglass. I'm not sure a film would stick either especially if the paint is loose in other spots.

A fiberglass guy would pull the rub rail, sand that vertical edge all the way around the platform, shoot it again and re-install the rub rail.

That peeling looks like a shoddy repair sometime in it's history. I've repaired a few of them, when I worked at the composites shop. PlayDate is spot on, that the old repair needs to be sanded off and repaired properly.

A quick cover up would, maybe, be to clean it up and remove as much of the chipping and have it wrapped.

The first shot show stress cracks and the 2nd shows the paint layered on and peeling. The rub rail needs to be pulled regardless of what you do and the paint needs to be sanded off down to the gel. Then you could apply the wrap, but at that point it doesn't take much to to re-spray alwgrip or gel. Anything else will be repeated again and again.

I would definitely get to the root of the original problem and then repair according or you will be just going through this again and again. A properly applied gelcoat would not be peeling like this. The other alternative is to just leave it and if it gets worse deal with it at that time. Might be tough to get a pro this time of the year but this is not a critical component and can even be dealt with having the boat in the water. I just had some substantial fiberglass work done and can offer recommendations if needed.
