I am curious to know where either the factory or a stereo shop would put a sub for an upgraded stereo system in the 240SD. My system is factory and I would like to eventually upgrade the stereo system to include a subwoofer. I was just curious where the best location for one would be and the amp for that matter? I prefer to have everything out of site.

Any suggestions/ideas?

I have a 190SD and I mounted the Clarion CMSW10.1 (actually mine is a CM2503 but same difference) in the starboard side rear step. Maybe I will post a photo of it after the next time I get to the boat. It is a great fit and good location as it can be felt anywhere in the main cockpit. I'm sure it has been kicked or had a ski slid into it once or twice, but those Clarion grilles are bullet-proof!

If you check out my site I've got some pictures of the factory installed sub & Amp.

I recommend a 5 channel amp and the Elemental Designs SQ10 Subwoofer. The 5 channel amp will amplify both your cockpit speakers as well as the new sub while using less space and simplifying your wiring, and that sub is very compact and efficient.

I have a 240SD as well and have done some stereo modifications while utilizing the exhisting head unit and speakers. I added 2 amplifiers, 2-10" subwoofers and 2 tower speakers.

As for the subwoofers, I put them in the side of the storage compartment that is behind the passenger seat. They are free air marine JL Audio 10" subwoofers and they sound great. Both amps are also mounted inside the same location. I am in 120 degree heat and have never had an issue with the amps getting too hot. I have gotten so many compliments on the sound and clean look they offer.

Got any pictures to show?

I'm sorry, I haven't had a chance to take pictures yet. I'm going out on the boat the weekend after this one and I'll take some pics and post them.

Thanks, I'm trying to decide what I want to do. Boat does need some bass the 6.5's in there just don't cut it for me.

subs

These are the subwoofers I'm running. They sound great. I'm really happy with them. I have an amp running those alone and my 6.5" coaxials run off the head unit and are plenty loud and sound great at high volume. The subs definitely fill the sound gab in the stock system. Would be a very easy install as well. The batteries are right there next to that compartment that is behind the passenger seat so the only wires you need to run are the remote wire and the rca cables.

I'll just have to figure out how to get the wires run from there to the head unit.

I looked at this sub and was surprised it was so cheap. I'm a newbie with these stereos. Could someone explain what I need to do?

Can I use the storage area as the box and face the sub into the battery area? Can I get an amp just for the sub or I should get an amp to handle the rest of the speakers? What feeds the amp from the head unit?
Thanks

Hey Chuck, dusting this thread off a bit. I tried checking out your site, but didn't see any pics of your installation. I was also wondering how/where you ran the amp wiring and speaker wires? I have done quite a few car installs when I was younger, but running wires inside a boat seems like a challenge. Ideally I need to figure out how to run the amp power wire to under the helm of my 220SD. I then need to figure out how to run new speaker wire to all the speaker location.

Thanks!
