Twin 5.7ltr mercruiser
Hi, im new to the forum and thanks for adding me. I have a 1992 Sea Ray Sundancer with twin 5.7ltr mercruiser stern drives. Bought the boat recently for a good price as it needed some work. My queation is is one of the engine standard rotation whilst the other counter rotation. And what i mean is does one engine turn in the opposite direction as the other or is the reverse drive happen in the gearbox. Thanks

Mine is a 2007-ish version, with 5.7s, but the engines both rotate same direction, but one transmission is in reverse. That is my understanding. I knew the props were counter rotating since they had different orientations, but wasn’t sure about the engine/transmissions until later.

David, I don't know if you have reverse rotation, or not, off hand. The easiest way to tell is to simply look at the props as Todd mentioned. Look at the angle of the blades. Another way is via your engine/drive serial numbers. Any Merc dealer can tell via that - or post them here, if you want. Possibly, the literature available on SR's website could tell you.

Also look for a color coded sticker on/near the valve covers or fuel rails. If you have the sticker I think it will state the rotation.

The output rotation from the motors is the same. Counter rotation is accomplished via the outdrive.

Hi, thanks for your reply, the props are definately counter rotation. Both lower legs need replacing and im trying to order replacements. I was of the opinion that one engine was counter rotating (which is a possibility). And im guessing you are wondering why i just dont start it and have a look? The reason i got it so cheap is because the lower leg casing had a small crack, the tilt rams anide corroded away and then the shafts corroded and the stb engine either has a buggerred starter motor or it may have taken water into one cylinder, so i wont be attempting to start that until its out of the water on a hardstand. I am trying to post a pic of the engine serial numbers.
