I'm picking up the new GPS next week, a Garmin 440S. What is the preferred mounting location for a GPS on a SD? Any pictures out there? Thanks.

With a unit that size you won't have too many choices. The top of the dash is probably the only suitable area.

Hey Charlie,

I've got my 276c mounted on the left hand side of the dash on MS Judy. Should be able to see some pics on my web site under the boating adv. link. Hope this helps.

Charlg here's a pic of our Garmin 3005c mounted to the left of the steering wheel. I chose the 3005c because it was a decent chartplotter and it was a good fit for that location. It's not at eye level, but works pretty good for us. Scott

Get a ram mount and attach the unit to the window support bracket. I called ram mount yesterday for the same install they said to look at these parts and it would work. B231 B201 B202G2 and an RAP319. I do have a bowrider but the design is similar.

Scott I like your install. Just wish I had the room on my 240.

I am waiting for Jim to get the 440 in. I tried to order one today but Garmin had not shipped his yet. I will look at the 3005 in a minute.

Good location. What did you use for a mount?

Went with the standard Garmin mount. Works good for me.

Got the GPS today. The screen seems a little small - 2.5" x 3.5". Is that a typical screen size for a 240? What are you using?

What unit did you go with? Sounds like you got the 440 and thats about the right size screen for most sport boats. My 276c is 3.75" diagonal (9.5 cm) transflective, 256-color display with backlighting (480 x 320 pixels).

Yes, I got the 440s. I think I was expecting something a little bigger since I had ordered it without seeing one. Thanks for the feedback, it sounds like it's going to be good fit for the 240. :smt038

You are welcome. Post some pic when you get it installed.

Ordered my 540 from Jim today. He thinks it will be shipped the 11th or so.

If the GPS gets here in time I will ram mount it to the windshield brace. I need to see what I am dealing with before ordering the parts. As a temporary messure I will use a cup holder.

SearayPaul,
Do you think the 540 is worth the extra few $ more than the 440? I'm having a hard time figuring the differences....beside the screen size. I still have a few weeks to decide.

Charlie

I went back and forth on the screen size also. I got to play with both the 440 and the 540 last weekend and that was the deciding factor. On an absolute percentage basis the 540 screen is much larger than the 440 screen and is contained in almost the same foot print. The Garmin sites lists the dimensions but they are a little misleading as the edges are curved etc so your overall unit is almost identical in size. Think of the volumne difference of water that a 1 inch pipe can handle as opposed to a 3/4 inch pipe but it is contained in a 13/16 of inch pipe.

There is a lot of information available on these units and with the smaller screen it looked busy to me. After looking at all of the available information it was easy to see why the big boats have huge chartplotters. The 540 was much easier to read according to my old eyes. I still was on the fence when I talked with Jim about another matter and like he said when the boat is bouncing you will want the bigger screen.

As for the 492 and 498 etc I do not believe they will run the 3d software, please verify that though.

As an aside the place I was at for flares really wanted to sell the 540 Saturday. When I told them I was not buying they offered to match any internet price. No deal. Jim has been good to us by sponsering this forum and is a general all round good guy. His prices are good so I choose to support him even though I will have to wait a few days for delivery.
