Well I upgraded to a Garmon 741XS chartplotter however i'm not a fan of running the Garmon radar though the 741. I just like a bigger display for radar like the old Raymarine that came with the boat. I don't see a Garmon radar only option? Does anyone know if there is an option since I already have the radar on the arch.

Garmin does not make a stand alone radar system, and you can not use your existing radar antenna (array) with a new style of any brand, they are not compatible or interchangeable with different brands.

I'm in a similar position right now. Upgrading to 742 chartplotters for nav/data but keeping my old school Raymarine radar display for a while longer to avoid the expense. Our vintage antennas are analog and will not connect with the newer stuff.

My plan is to keep my eyes open for a screaming deal on a 10" or 12" Garmin display over the couple of years. Once I nab one of those I'll start looking for a used digital Garmin antenna as well.

It's a bummer that old working scanners can't talk to modern MFD's. My old Ray XX could find birds miles away. The interface was world-class horrible, but after 17 key presses to dim the screen, the dang thing worked very well.

I have to give Garmin some credit in that department though. A friend of mine was on my boat yesterday. He looked at my circa '09 scanner and asked me what generation of MFD's it works with. It works with the current stuff, which I hadn't considered until right then. 10 years later and I'm still good to go. Garmin networking and software updates have also enabled features on my stuff that weren't available when the units were new. My 8212 now supports Active Captain and WiFi - features that weren't included when it came out of the box.

I agree that radar works better on a larger display, so the strategy Stee mentioned of getting a deal on a prev. gen MFD and networking it your 741 makes a lot of sense.
