Thank you for your collective patience. I am making slow but measurable progress...in fact, my original estimate of 500 stupid questions is steadily whitling down. The combination of reading manuals and going through Chapman's is answering a number of questions. However, here are five from yesterday and today.

1. First, based on a manual I found, this should be a Raymarine 230 (even though it doesn't say so ANYWHERE I could find).

004-4.jpg

The plastic cabling to the handset is cracked in several places...although it appears operative. Raymarine offers a repair/replacement process for this model for about $250. Would you repair/replace? Ignore? Upgrade?

2. On the floor of the rear berth is a light.

001-6.jpg

It performs its primary purpose...it lights up. However, there is no lens on it. I would like to replace the lens, but have now looked at about 3000 Perko and Atwood lights without successfully identifying a replacement. Anyone know for sure?

3. My RL80C+ Chartplotter doesn't have my local map (boat was purchased on another lake originally). I sent Jim at BOE an email looking for the local map (Lake Allatoona) but when I pulled out the chip...it looked like someone has simply copied a card off a card reader.

003-6.jpg

(Sorry about the blur). So do I need to be looking for somebody in a marine electronics shop with a card copier, or ordering a new one from BOE? (Don't worry, he'll get business either way.) Do I sell the old one or keep it for posterity?

4. In the acquisition process, I did get dual Taylor fender holders that were not installed, however, somebody wanted the stainless hangar j-hook straps that fit over the upper bow rails (apparently 1.5") and instead mine came with smaller ones (apparently 1.25") and the smaller ones don't fit. I need four, and can't find a source other than Taylor...is that where you would go?

5. (From the wife) Is there a preferred bathroom cleaning solution? Given the biological degradation taking place in the holding tank, it may be possible that the wrong cleaner could kill the little enzymatic creatures breaking down the effluent and that some marine safe cleaning solution is preferred...are we overthinking this? Is something better than something else? We will not be macerating anytime soon.

Some passing observations...although it was nowhere in the manuals, hitting the "cool" button on the HVAC in the stateroom is something eight year old girls do. The area becomes considerably less comfortable at night when it is 30 degrees outside. Dockmates can be quite forgiving...even when you forget to take the cart BACK up the steps and leave it parked at your slip the entire flippin' night. Blue CapriSuns are not the drink of choice for curious button pushing eight year olds. The shower works remarkably well when the tank has sufficient water to operate it. When a fuse blows, it may prove effective to apply common sense (check the panel fuse) before proudly showing off your eidetic absorbtion of the entire wiring diagram and heading into the bilge...but that's just me.

Jedi,

Is your boat on Alatoona or Lanier (I'm sure you're not moving a 380 back and forth)? Just curious.

I'm not nearly the expert of most of the guys here, but a couple of thougts:

1. RayMarine 230. The one thing I wouldn't do is pay $250 for a repair. Depending on how much you use/rely on VHF I would suggest either live with it as is, replace it with a new piece (which I think would cost <= $230 for for the handset if you can find it) or buy a handheld VHF. For the occasional lake use our handheld waterproof VHF seems to be of more use than the boat VHF anyway - if you don't already have a handheld I personally think $250 would be better spent on a waterproof handheld VHF but that's just my opinion.

2. I lost the lens on a light just like that, MarineMax at Bald Ridge ordered me a replacement. I don't have the details handy but what I do remember was that after searching all over the place I was able to determine that it's impossible to just get the lens, you have to get the entire assembly. I don't remember the cost but it seemed expensive to me for what it is, I think it was around $150.

The other items I'll defer to more experienced folks on.

Regards,
Jason

If you go to West Marine, they'll write whatever charts you need to a chip like that.

Jason, the boat has been on Lanier for the last couple of years (or so I was told). I had it moved to Allatoona for the time being. We may end up back at Lanier, or in FL...we are just not sure. For the time being though, we are going to keep it close and enjoy the familiarization.

Hampton, thanks for the heads up. I will give them a shout if I don't hear back from BOE. The West Marine closest to me is a bit of a spooky place. The guys are very very pleasant and super attentive. I just haven't had a lot of confidence in their input when I have been there.

I had a cracked cable on my Ray215. It was cosmetic but wan't to get a new one. went on RayMarine website, asked the question and got a reply in 24hrs. They have a funky replace/repair program with options, such as replacing whole unit(in my case mike and cable$$$) or sending to repair center(less $$). had to call to tell them to just repair. Got a hold of a really nice guy(Frank) in New Hampshire who guided me through the process and it ended up costing $65 including shipping! They replaced cable, checked out mike, resealed it, etc. Maybe yours can fall under the same process.

I would suggest removing the light and checking on the backside for some type of identification marking. I have been able to do this to ID some latches that have broken. You may find the mfg. name or a part number. Sea Ray part number for the light is 894642

On the radio......I have been able to source replacement items on Ebay much cheaper.

If you are referring to the Smyrna location, you hit the nail on the head - friendly people, but rarely have had the stuff I want/need in stock. Have heard that the Buford location is much better...

I had the same problem trying to find a replacement lens cover. Local Sea Ray dealer wanted to charge me ~$150 to replace the entire unit as well!

After scouring the planet, I ended up getting a similar LED light at Westmarine. It is not the exact size of the original light, but it works fine in carpeted locations and it's LED - therefore way less amperage draw!

AS for cleaning the bathroom, you're correct - you're overthinking the problem. The holding tank is not a septic system. Use whatever works for the bathroom.

I have the same radio 230 , sent it into Raymarine repair and teh cost was $149.00. This included checking the complte handset as it has to go in with the repair, you cannot disconnect the cable itself.

As to the chip you have West Marine wil burn jeppsen Charts onto the chips, which is why you probably have the hand written label.

Check out this thread for some more RL80CRC information

Check w/C-Map to see if they still have their trade-in program.
Used to be you could send in a used chip and they'd give you credit towards the purchase of a new one.

I'd think twice before putting a lot of money into that old VHF. Looks like you're a lake boater so it's probably not an issue for you, but I don't think it's DSC capable. I'd take some black Liquid Electrical Tape and seal up the cracks and use the radio until it dies...

It is DSC capable, and also has a hailer and fog alarm mode...that is providing you install an external speaker.

In the head cleaner, I use a spray or two of 409 or my favorite "Spray Nine", scrub and flush. Not to worry about killing a few zillion bacteria, just keep that charcoal filter for the head vent in peak condition or your Skipper Points will have to be renewed.

JediJD,
As someone aptly pointed out that you have a holding tank not a septic tank. The difference is the former is a glorified outhouse while the later provides waste treatment using either aerobic or anerobic (no O2) bacteria with low self esteem that are willing to eat the stuff.

As for your chip, I suggest you consider what I just bought from Jim at BOE which is Navionics Gold that now covers the entire country. I had the Central Region version in my previous boat and it provided good detail of the Illinois River. Jim informed me this afternoon that the chip now has been expanded to include all the inland waterways.

That chip won't work in his chart plotter, the RL80C uses CMAP charts, not the Navionics like the newer C-series

Sorry about that one, missed the chartplotter model #.:smt021

Thanks guys...updates.

1. $149 updated my Raymarine 230 to brand new. They would have wiped the MMSI if it needed it. New cord, new screen. Looks great.

2. The light is still cover-less. I punted on the $150 MM option and set up a Craigslist Tempest search and eBay search for a light. Maybe FlounderPounder will cut one loose one day.

3. Wasted $40 responding to an eBay ad that misidentified a C-Map NT+ card (turned out to be an SD card). Have gotten several $150 opportunities to fix the problem properly, and may still...but still thinking I am going to find something that will do for my lake Allatoona use for $50 or so.

4. Taylormade was awesome. Sent me the J hooks I needed on request for the forward tender holders.

5. Thanks to Carter and Sue of her majesty's most wonderful ship "Reward". I learned to pump out the holding tank. It was ghastly. Probably hadn't been pumped in a year or two. I need to run a couple of tanks of water through and clean it out properly, but we are making progress.

6. While on the Raymarine front, paid to update the chartplotter to 4.11 (about $100...firmware chip on my desk. After I get done with it, I would never condone improper multiple usage, but if someone wants to inspect it for accuracy, pm me). Replacing the Raystar 120 with the 125 this week, the DSM300 is being installed this week, the Intellian is wired and ready for install but gets on the arch this week, and all the LED's were replaced with SMD's. Blue Capri Sun's have been banned and eight year olds know not to turn off the heater when its 30 degrees outside. Making progress.
