Twin 4.3 Liter Mercruiser w/Alpha One Gen 2 Drives
I have a 2004 280 Sundancer twin 4.3 L with Alpha One Gen 2 outdrives. I’ve been removing and installing the two out drives for the last 5 seasons, never had an issue. I replaced the risers and manifolds on both engines in early spring. I went to install the port outdrive, which is a counter rotating outdrive, and cannot get it less than an inch from the mounting bolts. I have the shifter in reverse for counter rotation install, I checked the alignment of the coupling with the alignment tool, and didn’t use too much grease on the splines. I also made sure the o-rings were in the correct positions. At wits end looking for suggestions. Thanks!

I hate it, but one of great things about twins is that you can switch parts. Even though they are different drives, you should be able to put them on the wrong side if the shift coupling is aligned (wrong). So 6 nut's X 2, and you have found your problem.

Also take a look with a flashlight into the coupler to make sure the end isn’t jammed up with grease. I didn’t believe it would be possible but one year I had the same thing and after cleaning out the coupler the drive installed properly, it was jam packed.

I believe I simply duct taped a rag to a dowel and poked at it

Thanks for the replies I will give them a try.
