The threads pictured here are stripped. This is an old pic with nut in place. The nut would hold the lever to open the thru hull but it’s since been stripped. Is there a way to remove this stem to replace? Last thing I want to do is replace the thru hull but I will if I have to. Just want to see if this can be serviced without removing. Not much room to work here either. Also any idea on model? I can pick one up to experiment with up close if I can find exact model.

That’s not an easy spot to get to. Can you unscrew the valve from the thru hull? I’d image it is made by groco and they’d have a rebuild kit.

Dean,

To the right of the red arrow you can see where the wrench goes to loosen/remove the stem. Tough spot but should be doable.

Ours are Apollo valves with yellow handles. Groco come with white handles.

Exercising seacocks regularly will prevent freezing and stripping.

Thanks Alex, will give it a try. This is the overboard discharge which was missing a handle and I didn't pay much mind to until I wanted to try to get it working.

Went trough this last year. Boat out of the water and replace the whole thing. They use a huge breaker bar from underneath to unscrew the outer flange that is threaded up into the valve body.

Trying to remove the stem from the Apollo thru hull. Based on the diagram it seems the stem is just held in with a gland nut that i've removed and a stem seal. Slowly trying to work at it but doesn't seem to be budging. Any one with experience with these? Trying not to remove the whole thru hull if i don't have to.

I've tried what you are trying and with no success in doing so, ever. I would say add some heat in to the mix, but that would probably damage the assembly seals. I would say it's easier to replace then to try and repair in this case. Even replacing can be challenging to remove the outer flange as Grant mentioned.

But can you get the new stem? If not this is all for not.

Good question. At the very least was hoping to get it out to verify dimensions. Have seen whole units on ebay.

If your going to remove the whole thing then, which sounds like what needs to take place, then replacing should be what's next. JMO.

Remember applying to much force could loosen the seal to the bottom of the boat and you end up with a leak, however small it may be.

You said “discharge” fitting is this for the black water/macerater? If yes. The handle needs to be removed or locked closed when inshore to be legal.
If you need to replace the valve consider drilling a hole in the handle and making a bracket to be able to use a small padlock. Then you won’t need to ever remove the handle.

yes this is for the macerator. the stem is stripped to the point the only way to use it is with a vice grip. I may just leave as is and carry a vice grip to open and close on the few occasions we can use it.

You can also have a Key to engage the electronics as well. I have this on my boat and have been inspected and this was brought up.
