I would like to put a strainer in between the raw water pump and the oil cooler so that if the impeller breaks apart it will wind up in the strainer not the oil cooler, but the problem is no strainers with 1.25" in and out even comes close to 30 gpm. So now I know why I never see one in any of the cooling drawings. I know one way to increase the gpm on a plastic strainer is to cut the inlet feed tube to about an inch above the bottom, any thoughts ???

Do you have a strainer in front of your raw water pump now? Just curious, looking to add one to my system in the next couple of weeks but am unaware of what strainer is being used by others. Would think anything that will supply your pump would easily work for it's discharge as long as it can handle it's pressure.
Picked up (last minute) a Groco WSB-1250 (50 GPM) with 1.25" ports while grabbing some other marine goodies but not sure if it is the right option.
They were only letting 2 customers into their store at a time and there was a line up. Didn't want to ask them a bunch questions.

this is what I found out : The strainers should be on the thru-hull connection, one being the clam shell type, those slits act as a strainer, there is one with a screen built in also,or if it comes thru your outdrive you have one already

if your raw water is coming from the outdrive that acts as a strainer, those little holes in the bottom leg,I was more concerned about the impeller braking down,I also teed into my supply and went to a thru-hull clam shell that was already there for the wash down supply,I just didn't like that small 5/8" hose that goes thru the outdrive, when I bought this boat it was cheap because it had overheated,Everything that went thru that transom was melted, that strainer you bought must of cost a bundle,I think the pump puts out 30 gpm,I try to buy everything offline
