Store canvas in the boat during winter???

Just curious if storing the canvas / plastic, flat on the bed in the winter has any damaging effects on it? I have new polycarb front pieces that don't roll up.

Or is it simply better to store at home in a warmer temperature? Suggestions?

Thanks!

Re: Store canvas in the boat during winter???

I decided to take my canvas home and store it inside where its warm. The previous owner spent 5k redoing all the canvas and had some pieces rolled up and some stored in the closet. Once i took it home, laid it out flat for 2 weeks I would never leave it on the boat again during the winter.

Bring mine home every winter. I have a some closet rods that I put in the garage to lay the canvas over and hang against the wall. I put a pillow case or sheet between anything that has the potential to scratch.

Properly stored at home is best but laid flat on boat over the Winter is not going to hurt it (assuming it is left untouched until warmth returns in the Spring).

Polycarbonate panels require special care. The material is an extruded plastic and must be stored flat or the plastic may retain the shape you left them in. Hanging or flat with protection between panels is best. Be careful handling cold polycarbonate panels. While the material is flexible, it gets less so as the temperature goes down. A bend you did easily in the summer, may shatter the sheet in the winter. Finally, even though the material used may be coated and approved for glazing in thicker forms, it is very succeptable to scratching so be sure the panels are clean before you remove them from the boat and start handling them.

Re: Store canvas in the boat during winter???

I've stored the canvas/plastic pieces onboard for the past four seasons without any problems. I lay them flat in the aft (set up as a bed) with sheets between each layer. The boat is shrink wrapped for the winter so no-one is on board until spring.

We have stored our canvas and drop curtains on board since the boat was new in 2004. Canvas still looks great. We do have good storage available on the boat and it is put away clean in heated storage. Have not noticed any ill effects. The isinglass on the hard top never comes off except for occasional cleaning of the hard to reach areas of the top. It still looks factory fresh.

I do the same except the plastic is on the v-berth. No issues after 6 years.

You have good advice regarding the canvas but as a side note, I did not store a single thing on my 280DA (or my current boat) --- but for different reasons. My goal is to make the boat as inhospitable as possible to any type of creature so I remove absolutely everything before shrink wrapping. On the 280DA that meant that I removed the v-berth and aft berth cushions along with the dining cushions, etc. I don't want mice or anything else looking for a relatively cozy place to make a nest. Hard surfaces with nothing to hide under is my goal for winter storage. I open all storage areas and keep the cushions lifted.

A friend had a nice mouse nest and under his life jackets one winter.
