Hey guys,

Has any one checked out this device?

http://sterling-power-usa.com/12volt130ampalternatortobatterycharger.aspx

It is reported to provide a four level charge to your batteries from your alternator.

With my inverter setup I am concerned about blowing my alternator by recharging the batteries after extended use with the long charge required of the alternator.

I am expecting the charge capability of the unit will be limited to the output of the alternator. I think it is just a fancy voltage regulator. It should work as they describe, but I suspect it will still be a function of the alternator to provide all of the juice.

Most of my time is spent at low speed and the alternator just doesn't kick that much juice at low rpm's.

I sent an email to the vendor asking the same questions and will let you guys know what they say.

Well even though they advertise marine use it does not look good for us gas boaters.
Safety:
The alternator-to-battery charger contains
electrical components which may produce sparks in event of failure to avoid the risk of fire or explosion, do not install the unit in rooms containing batteries or highly inflammable materials or in any place requiring explosion-proof equipment. This includes any room with petrol, gas
driven engines or with tanks or piping used for any such substance.

I spoke w/ the engineering department in the UK.
The only thing is the small blade fuse, change it to a sealed, ignition protected blade fuse.

Thank you,

I did some quick checks on line and they make ignition protected blade fuses. This may still be an option.
