Ok, I've decided it's time to upgrade the factory Clarion cassette deck/two speakers in my 99 180 (new to me last season). I plan on keeping the receiver in the glove box location and like the idea of having a remote mounted on the right by the gauges. I have surfed around ebay and found some deals but have a few questions.

I think I remember someone on the old site last year mounting a Clarion CMD4 in the dash on a newer model. Is this going to fit OK in the dash? Is the CMD4/CMD5 overkill in the glove box and should I stick with the m455/m475? I can't imagine anything getting direct spray in the glove box. Any other brands I should check out with a decent waterproof remote?

Next is the speakers. Right now there are two up under the dash and I would like to replace those and add two more. I was thinking a couple of 6.5" on the trim panel under the side grab handles. Anyone else tried something different? What brands would you recommend?

Any input would be appreciated! Thanks.

jbl make nice radios with remote (they are mounted on meridians)
upgrading just speakers won't help too much
you need amplifier - most stereos are 2x or 4x 20 to 50 watts music peak

I have a 2006 Sea Ray with the stock Clarion unit (not sure of the model) but it does have the CeNet technology. I would say that with your location being in the glovebox, you could use any brand you choose as long as it's the same size. I just added to my unit by adding an amplifier for the tower speakers and an amplifier to power 2-10" subwoofers. The stock clarion speakers (4 total) are running off the head unit (4x50watts) and it's plenty loud while retaining good quality. I would just get a new headunit that puts out good power and buy some good quality marine speakers and if you wanted to go beyond that, get a amplifier and a free-air subwoofer. That means you wont have to build an enclosure for it. You can just cut a hole in the side of where the seat is and pop it in and it will use the storage area for an enclosure. My JL subwoofers sound incredible and were not that expensive. Anyways, that is my $.02.

Consider a 5-channel amp. They include a mono subwoofer amp, save space and weight, and simplify wiring. It worked well for me.
