Steering play normal?

Just got my 2003, 400 hr, 5.0 L, 21' Bowrider with power steering out for first time. Prior boats were 150 hp+ outboards with manual steering. Surprised that new steering is not as light as a car's. Also, there is about 3/4" center play measured on perimeter of steering wheel. Quickly got used to it but wonder if this is normal. Topped off reservoir earlier.
