Replacing my starter and ordered one from Michigan motors.... API brand. It is much smaller than the one I pulled out. The rear set screw doesn't reach the bracket and the 2 bolts that hold it in go all the way in till I can't tighten any more yet leaves like 1/8inch play....... do I need shims?

Answered my own question upon closer inspection. They sent the wrong starter. This one appears to be for the 3.0 and I have the 5.7. Considerable size different in starter.

prob sent you a gear reduction starter.....do not need the support bracket, but definately get the right bolts....you should only need to shim it if it binds when you crank it...

Exactly a gear reduction starter. Perhaps they're interchangeable between 3.0 and 5.7? Threw the old starter back in with a hope and prayer it gets me through the lake day tomorrow. Just going to send it back and get the OEM starter.... that's what I get for trying to save a few bucks

Get the PM one, smaller and lighter, and you need the staggered bolt pattern and use the specific bolts for that starter

PM? This one has the staggered bolt pattern and it lined up correctly. When I held both starters the "block" where the bolts go through was significantly shorter/smaller. It looks like this one replaces the mercruiser p/n 50-863007A1 which is the OEM starter. I just need shorter bolts. Realistically I don't k ow when I will feel like undoing everything again to change it out. It's 100+ for the next week or so.

*sigh* just received the replacement "OEM" starter from Michigan motorz and low and behold they're the same size! I guess I was assuming when I explain the problem to the sales rep he was physically put his hands on the other products and verify that it was not the same thing waiting on a call back from them now to rectify the situation
