Starlink

The increase is this area and all of CA as well. @Irie308 I think the LI Sound area is left out of this. Very strange how they are handling this.

I did get that email as I ordered mine back in 2021 using one of our work addresses which is in VA. I had it shipped to my home address in CT.

I guess if you change your home address to CT then you won't get the increase?

Yeah, have seen this trend before. Data caps which you can pay for higher usage packages then the price slowly creeps up. One would think the price plans would be less with more subscribers but I guess if the demand is there why not increase it.
I think the issue with this service is that it can easily be overwhelmed. They are trying to maintain quality of service, which is why they expect to lose some subscribers and making it easy for them to cancel

For the 4-5 months out of the year that we use it on the boat. I still think its well worth it. The fact that you can pause the service for us northern boaters makes it less of an issue.
On a slightly different topic of starlink. I wanted to get feedback from the group. I'm thinking of deploying a unit for a work client who has property in the Bahamas. Current network speeds for local isp is 30mbps. Issue with doing this is the Bahamas is not a "service area" so we can't use the address there to register a starlink unit. If we purchase the rv version and ship it to the Bahamas it will have to come back to the U.S every 2 months to "check in" or I guess SL will deactivate the unit. The marine version would be the next option but too cost prohibitive.

@Irie308 Can't speak to having to come back into the states every two months. Didn't think you had to be around your address if you had the RV package. Your service address is VA but use in CT and the surrounding area. Wouldn't think the Bahama's would make much of a difference.

When I subscribed last summer I was also in a no service area. now the same area is now classified as a limited service area.

It’s also strange that this area isn’t covered well considering many of the launches go right across this area.
It's covered, due to the high population they are just limiting the number of users to preserve service quality. Residential isn't available but my RV Service works well...

Bahamas status according to the world Starlink map is "Starting in 2023" so service is likely pretty close. I put in a random Bahamas address and was offered a spot on the waiting list for $99.

Actually the issue is not enough land based relay stations. They need to put in a lot more stations to meet the demand.

And so it begins - received an email this morning - It's only $15/month so just an annoyance. I hate getting nickle'd and dime'd.

The monthly service price for Starlink is increasing in areas with limited capacity. As a service that can be used in any area, including those with limited capacity, the monthly service price for existing Starlink for RV customers will increase by $15 to $150/month beginning April 24, 2023.

If you do not wish to continue service, you can cancel at any time on your account page. Your Starlink hardware can be returned for a full refund within 30 days of purchase, or partial refund of $250 within 12 months of purchase.

As the SpaceX team launches more satellites to increase capacity, the Starlink team is making continuous network updates to improve performance over time. Thanks for being a customer and for your continued support of Starlink!
Not sure it's been mentioned earlier, but Starlink is now offering a $2500 "in-motion" flat high performance wedge mount dish as an option for RV service. If I were on the fence about moving forward on Starlink I'd be concerned that this might become the only mobile option. I've read that Starlink subsidizes the standard dish by on the order of $2K so I wouldn't blame them if they started charging closer to what it costs them. I imagine demand may be getting high enough that they won't feel as much of a need to entice new customers by low-balling the equipment.

And now their site advertises the $150/month charge, so maybe now it's across the board and not just the outliers.

So more StarLink antics…. I’m thinking about flat mounting my RV unit here on my arch. Would like to remove the mast of the SL and go with a flat mount like starmount. However I’m not sure if the StarLink has enough clearance to view the sky from all angles with the fixed array. Obviously I wouldn’t operate while running the radar. Any thoughts on if the radar mount would be an obstruction? StarLink doesn’t say what requirements are for their flat mount unit other than clear view of the sky.

You say TV unit, then say mount SL?

Why not just mount the SL on a 1" mount, possibly remove your TV antenna and use that mount. Very easy way to go. Do you have enough depth to flat mount? But to answer your question, that is a fairly large obstruction. I have mine in a similar location but only have a 1' dtv dome blocking. But that doesn't seem to interfere with it at all.

Sorry that’s meant to be “RV” not tv(EDITED). Not a fan of the height of the unit as is. But not sure when motor disabled and unit is pointing straight up would the radar impact line of sight to satellites as the fixed array track them across the sky. Is your motor disabled? Do you have pic of how it’s mounted?

Not sure what the offset height would be against the radar height.

Post #144 shows how to disable the motor(s). But yes mine is disabled and works fantastic.

I just got fiber installed at my rural property and it's just as fast as my suburban place.

My FIL bought my Starlink off me, but if anyone is needing to make cables for theirs, I have all this stuff I bought when I extended my cable out to 200'. Zero speed loss, I was thoroughly impressed!
