Starlink

Yeah, that one was on my list (actually not my list, but Tom's Hardware guide. https://www.tomsguide.com/us/best-mesh-router,review-5191.html). I definitely didn't want the Google Nest for various reasons.

I was coming off a Netgear Nighthawk that had problems right out of the gate so I kind of had a bad taste in my mouth with Netgear and wanted something different. I may have to revisit that. The Orbi was also listed as the most expensive option, but I guess you get what you pay for with the TP-Link that I got.

Yeah, Netgear routers are a bit tough at times. The Orbi can be put into Access point mode which relieves all of that and why I have an ASUS AX3000 router. I also have one on the boat as well. They are also VPN (client/Server) routers which works really well.

I tried to use TP-Link, their tech support is horrible and out of this country, emails are always a day off. Most of their features are great, except they don't always work correctly, or I should say not in line with industry standards.

... Addresses where available (my home was) entered at Starlink.com will reveal a better picture but not much more info.

Confused? Map show's we're still wait listed until 2023.

Try entering your address. I don't think the map applies to RV.

I entered for residential and it stated wait list. But you are correct under RV it states low capacity. Makes sense now, last Sunday on the way back from St. Michaels I had the xfinity race re-playing the whole way back and no loss of service. And lately I have had better service on weekends. Right now it has speeds close to 200Mbps. On Fridays it was going down to ~10-12. But Sunday was streaming 4K replays while underway.

Try also pressing "order now" with your address and you should get another page with a few more panes of info and some pictures.
Speculation online is the the new version is still 120V and won't provide much if any service improvement for boaters but it's just guessing for now. Also fears that Starlink will figure out who the boaters are and start restricting use.

To me the $2500 array is just a business array on a flat mount. Probably gives better reception for faster moving cars/boats etc. I doubt they will force the rv dish to no motion but they have supposedly already done that with an update last month, no service over 10mph until stopped. They may some how force the need to purchase the in motion array, but I think that is the worst of it. Until they get enough customers and start raising prices down the line. They've done a pretty good job this far at not being the highest price on the block.

I agree, for me all I care about is I have service when I am stopped. No hurry for me to have service while underway.

You should look at unplugging the motors, it works really well that way. I am going to try the POE mod and see if I can get rid of the router that is being used for power only.

Works really well with the Peplink. The one time they cut my service while in motion the Peplink failed over to WiFi when I got back to the marina. I had to check and see which was providing iNet. When I did, I saw it fail back to the Starlink. Pretty cool tech for a boat.

I haven’t watched this yet, but the YouTubers “Tulsa’s Endless Summer” are putting in Starlink.

edit— after watching all they do is get one, plug it in and connect to WiFi. No in-depth commentary or anything. My bad.

Here is Steve's (Seabits) review of the Mobility array from Starlink. One of his best reviews IMO, it also includes the Peplink.

I don't see upgrading to this as I don't see the benefit of the significant extra cost over the the standard array (dishy).

I am with you... I already have it, only use it at the dock or on the hook. Going to use what I have and watch the evolution for awhile.

Currently it works great, no real outages and even works while cruising slow. To Seabit's point it does drop off while cruising speed.

My only concern is that SL will make a separation of the two dishes and start using the internal GPS to depict the exact location of land and water and require water use to have the new mobility array. So far there is nothing that makes me think there will be but there is a lot of chatter about this in other groups and it makes you think there will be, but no one knows what SL has in mind for this. I don't think they do either right now.

When I winterize my boat, it goes in a covered slip for the winter. This year I figured I would have to switch back to the marina wifi for my remote monitoring to work but as crazy as this may sound the SL is still working as good as ever. This SS is from this morning (From the house) and the boat is in a covered slip in the middle of the dock and the bow is facing north. The azimuth must be at a very low angle for this to work.

That's showing the wifi you're connected to, not Starlink's speed. You have to be connected to the Starlink wifi for that speed test to run on Starlink (its got me once before).

Actually not the case. I don't use their wifi router and that message for me is always there. At times I get the reduced service message as well and speeds are only ~10-15MBps, that is never my home network speed. You can test the speed remotely and get statistics that are logged, like outages. To get the visibility you need to be connected.

If you don't use their integrated wifi router and that message is always there that is true. But if you are NOT connected to the internet via Starlink, that message applies. The app has no way to run a speed test on Starlink if you aren't pulling internet over Starlink.

If I'm at my non-Starlink home and use the Starlink app to run a speed test, it gives me the same pop up. When I'm at the Starlink home and on the Starlink network, no pop up...

You can go into "Statistics" and see the past 5-10 minutes of download / upload speeds as well as outage data, but there is no way to run a Starlink speed test if you're not on the network.

Speed test fluctuate, even on my main home fiber line. Not uncommon to see.
