Starlink

Well,
I started this post in May our Star link went active May 15th on our boat. We are on a lake however our lake is in one of the most remote spots of Utah and Az for cell and internet service. So remote that if you boat the lake like we do you have all the cell spots gps market in your maps and out of 100 mile stretch there are only 12 spots to get cell services.

With that said Starlink has been a game changer not only for me but I would say by now 100 or more boats have it. When in a good spot" it likes north vertical view" we are seeing 130 to 155 Mbps. Full email, cell and download to netflix ...etc..

I will be taking off my tracvision dome as we never used it and that is where our starlink will be mounted.
Right now it has a temporary home on the bow of the boat.
Hardware was one time $600.00 fee and monthly fee $110.00 per month + $25.00 for portability.

It works while underway.

I could see some kind of super starlink for the large super yachts.

However ours works just fine. We even had at one time 43 people connected to it and nothing slowed down.

The only con I have about it is the cable has a male end and starlink has yet to come out with a female to male connector so if you wanted to extend the cable or make it like your shore power to unplug at the transom you have to hack there cable... it is like cat 6 but not cat 6.

Can you state how you got the underway working, and also the $25 portability fee? Their site doesn't show that, but I am very interested in this. Thanks.

EDIT: Answered my own question: https://support.starlink.com/?topic=76371e8a-d994-e9d1-f96d-456e385cb0b5 found it in support.

My area is wait listed, so I guess sketchy service at best. Hopefully next year my area (Chesapeake) will have service. This looks real promising.

The Starlink web site doesn’t give a lot of info.

once you get a Starlink account set up you then can go into your account and activate portability ($26.00) per month this gives you approval to move the service as you go.
The Starlink dish is not like direct tv or other dishes. Starlink dish is motorized and as you move it looks for satellites to link onto. You can physically watch it move as you go and at times when at anchor it will move to correct the Signal from the boat moving.

We just returned from a 35 day trip on the boat. Two of those weeks were full vacation and the rest was working remote. All of which was made possible by starlink. Can't say enough great things about starlink. It didn't skip a beat the entire trip which had a mix of days in a slip, on a mooring and at anchor in high winds. It was flawless. Speeds were consistently above 100mbs. The admiral and I both screen shared, zoom and streamed tv services all at the same time and the starlink delivered. My only concern is that the service may only get worse as more people get them and their is congestion or Elon decides to jack up the prices but i guess time will tell. Also not sure how well the home/rv version will hold up in salt air\water conditions. I'm also in no rush to mount my unit as it works very well on the bow or stern. I can wait for the "affordable" marine version for now.

@Irie308 OMG! 35 days on the boat and also working to boot! That is my dream summer!

@Joint Custody Thanks for posting all of this, I can't wait for service to come to my area. I would take the TV dome down and put the sat link mount right there. But yes, how long will the home/rv dish last in the marine elements.

One thing I was thinking about is possibly mounting that inside of an empty dome, would have to see how that works if at all when I can move over to this hopefully next year.

Mine will be mounted to the hard top right where my tracvision dome will be coming off.

If you start searching on google lots of people doing interesting things to mount it.

This is a game changer and I am sure at some point starlink will be coming out with a more RV/Marine dish that holds up to the environment. I would also think at some point they will be offering TV and some sort of cell phone that works along with it. One rumor in the tech world is next gen apple will be a satellite phone all in one .

I love the idea of Starlink - I look at it as replacing the KVH for content on TV - and opening up streaming and internet connectivity.

Not wild about the RV mount approach - that's just me. If it works for you great.

My objection is I don't want to deal with setting it up, worrying about going through a storm - having to take it down. We cruise most of the time in open water, everything gets salty, so something else to clean.

I want something attached permanently to the roof that is always available. That sounds like the Marine version to me - but not paying the current pricing. Just not worth it.

Our big TV time is football season - so looks like another season on DirectTV. We just got back from 2 weeks on the boat and I think we turned on the TV twice to watch the news.

Thank you for your contribution. I simply posted what a majority of actual people are experiencing. Even on a commercial fishing charter, Starlink in the RV/portable format seems to be the choice. I asked for the link because I wondered if that was a “mega yacht” unit. I’m sorry if I came across questioning your integrity. That was not my intention.

No problem. All is good.

I was going to upgrade my cell antenna for my Peplink, but now I am waiting on that in hopes this is available sooner then later. To ba able to have that kind of service is a game changer, not sure it's ready for the house, but the boat most definitely. Unless they up the rates like they most likely will do. ...

They have " stow mode" this puts the dish into a locked position for underway.

I will be mounting mine permanently in a couple weeks . I will send pics. I think it will turn out good and be a clean install.

Will be interested in what the permanent mounting looks like.

In Florida I have to consider wind. Even if not hurricane force, tropical storm level wind happens every year.

Here is part 2 of that video:

They say they don't recommend this for boats (I think because they have too) but then say they love it and it's amazing.

BTW for any one that still has "STARLINK" anywhere in the name of your SSID on the unit. I guess Elon is not a fan so he changed the ssid to "stinky" forcing you go back in and update the name. Just an fyi if you notice your wifi disappears at some point when you boot up the unit.

Yep. This through us for a loop when it happen. We thought at first we had been hacked.

There’s a facebook group about starlink on boats and people report great service all over the place, including out in the open ocean. ...

Hey if you have a link to that group that would be nice. Just tried searching for it and it turned up everything but that. Thanks.

Not sure how the first search went bad but here it is: https://www.facebook.com/groups/starlinkonboats

FYI, DirectTV NFL deal is ending after this season and it is highly unlikely they will have that again. Did see that Amazon and Apple were the top competitors so far and DTV may get an agreement with the winner to still provide the service to bars.
