Need to cut Starboard for Dinghy rails and need advice as to which tools and blades work the best! I don't have access to a band saw or drill press, will be using standard power tools. For the curved cuts I was planning on using a Jig saw with alot of fine teeth on the blade, any suggestions would be appreciated!

Starboard works like wood, I bought nothing special when I did my davit arms, just what was already on my saws worked fine.
Good luck

Thanks Mark, going to go to Home Depot now! I need a new Jig saw and Blade set!!! Love buying New Tools!:smt038

Jigsaws are my best friend. The other thing would be a cicular saw blade deisgned for cutting ABS/Plastic.

Marshall,
After I was done cutting mine on the Band Saw it wasn't any cleaner than a Jig Saw would produce. I had a course file that I used to round of the edges and take off some of the saw marks. Some here have tried Water Jet $$ that would be a cool tool to buy. Good Luck, I'm glad you like the SS hardware.:smt038

I just bought a set of blades and used my jiksaw. It takes a while to cut, not like wood. So, be patient. Without fency tools you compensate by taking your time.

The Circular saw works well however the Jig saw is leaving clumps of plastic that is resealing the cut?

Thanks Alex, yes it's a slow process, the cuts are talking very long with the Jig saw!!!!!:wow:

My ramps are 1" thik, so I know that it takes a while to cut them. Don't rush, you do this ones and you're done for long time. No need to screw it up.

I emailed a drawing of what I wanted to a company in Florida that makes all kind of cabinets and stuff for boats (don't remember the name) out of Starboard. If I would have cut them with any kind of power tool it would have looked like a shark got a hold of them. This is by far the coolest mod I've done.

i used my circular saw with a blade that is designed to cut plastic. it worked well for me.

Oh, that reminded me that I've used table saw to cut the longer streight parts and for the rest of the cutting I've used jigsaw. Yeah, cutting every single part with just the jigsaw is a pain.

Bandsaw works great, but a jigsaw will melt the Starboard. Use a table router to do the edges. You can use a belt sander at a slow speed to smooth things out, but watch for the melting!

Sorry to hear about your troubles,
Maybe we are working with different materials.

I looked it up, I used King Starboard. 3/4"
I didn't use fine teeth though, Regular carbide blades on my table saw, I have 10 tpi on the band saw and jig saw.
drum sander on the drill press to remove teeth marks
The only problem was that it looked like it snowed in my shop.

Mine are also, the Seaboard cleans up well with a Random orbital here's a shot of the first one!
That stuff makes a MESS!:wow:

Here's the Final shot all done! It took me two hours to clean my Tools and the Garage of all the Dust!!

I just saw the end of this ,project looks good .I use a medium wood blade in the jigsaw and it is variable speed with orbital, so i slow down a bit and turn the orbital up all the way.It doesnt melt this way.I would like to try it with a scroll saw with variable speed sometime to see if it handles any better on the radius cuts.My next project will need a radial arm saw, chop saw and table saw .And a drill press.new dash panel coming up!
