We have a 2003 Sundancer 380 and are ordering new bimini and side curtains. We are located in Grand Haven, MI and boat on Lake Michigan. We are trying to decide between white or black stamoid. The hull is all white. We are concerned about keeping the white stamoid clean as there is a coal plant in town and the boats get coal dust on them. On the other hand we are concerned about black due to heat and the color fading. Does anyone have any experience with either of these colors and the pros and cons? Thanks.:smt100

We put White on GT in January 2008, just finished the Great Loop, spent 3 1/2 months in Key West this winter and it still looks great. I'd give it a 95% rating compared to the day it was put on. If and when it needs replacing unless something else comes out better will use the same Stamoid material again.

Were located on the Chesapeake Bay Area and it is considerably cooler in the summer than the original tan that came on the boat. Boats 15 years old and the white color made the boat look like a newer boat than many five year old boats with the Tan or the Black which does look good but the heat difference is unreel. If ya want to see a picture that is current shoot me a pm.

I really like the way your boat looks with the white top and the black sides and back. Our 2003 has an arch so we would have to put the white stamoid on the front of the arch and the back. I wonder how the split color scheme with cloth front and rear on top would look with the arch

PK, I'd go ahead with the white on top and sides. You will love how cool it stays beneath the bimini. Stamoid is a fairly easy material to clean--as long as you can get to it to clean it. I can reach my aft bimini to clean it without any problem. I can't reach the upper bimini so all I can do is spray water on it and let the dirt run off. With your boat you shouldn't have a problem reaching the horizontal surfaces.

Looks are a personal thing - mine is something to go by I guess. The Stamoid is a similar colour to the white gelcoat so it matches well, and in my opinion, arguably gives the boat a more modern integrated look.

I don't mind the Sunbrella black sides as these are handled when boating either being rolled up are can be completely removed and stored by sliding them out of the sail track - so less likely to see grubby marks with being handled.

The black Sunbrella on the rear/sides is also a better sunblock if that is what you are wanting or needing. I just drop a side or rear curtain to block the sun as needed based on the sun intensity and position.

Another pic last summer under the new bimini - me working out (and my daughter working me out)

I think you'd regret the white at certain times in Grand Haven. There was a two/three week period last year where the winds were just right and the coal dust was TERRIBLE down at Grand Isle. I'm sure there are other marinas that also get it depending on wind speed/direction. It was worse than parking under the fireworks, much worse.

And it didn't clean off well. Once wet that ash turned into a nasty mess. We even had folks circulating a petition under the impression that GHBLP had somehow changed their process releasing more than the normal amount of ash.

I think white would be a nightmare in that situation. Or if you're close to the fireworks for that matter. My two cents only!
