We might be re-locating to St. Petersburg in a few months and would appreciate any information and advice regarding marinas in the Tampa/St. Pete area. We'd like to find a place that's more than just a place to dock the boat and has good social aspects and youth programs (e.g., fishing events, youth sailing). From doing a bit of Internet research, the Pasadena Yacht & CC and St. Pete Yacht Club look like good potential options. Any perspectives on those and other suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome! You will love St. Pete! I have been here since 1990 and I often say "every day is a vacation".

The choices you mention would be fine, however you may want to research whether they will have slips available. My understanding is that St. Pete Yacht Club still has a wait list for in-water slips. If you want to be near downtown St. Pete, consider the Vinoy. Boat owners who lease slips have access to the Vinoy Club, which has many social programs. You can find out more here: http://www.vinoyclub.com/ ( I am a member and would be happy to chat about it with you- send me a PM)

Regardless of where you end up, I am confident you will love the St. Pete area!

Thanks very much for this Brian. I hadn't discovered the Vinoy in my web research, but it looks very nice and exactly like the type of place we'd be interested in. If the moves firms up and becomes a reality, then I'll definitely follow-up with you to get more information.

I'm a memeber on the St. Pete Yacht Club and I do beilieve there is a year waiting list or so. You can call and ask for Adam or John (dock maters) and they will be able to tell you. SPYC and the Vinoy are only yards apart and right in downtown St. Pete. We have some really nice restaurants and clubs along with the Dali museum and theaters and live music. I have friends who are memebers at the Pasdena YC and like it there but they don't have recprocity to other yacht clubs. It's a stand alone club. Memebers of St. Pete have the ability to travel to all the other YC's in our area (and there are quite a few) with in my mind is well worth it. We're heading to Caroulle YC this weekend for 4 days. SPYC has many clubs to fit everybody's needs along with paddleboards, sailing lessons and so forth. The Vinoy is also a very nice place and again cloe to everything.

Thanks for all that information, very helpful, especially the point about reciprocity.

http://www.stpete.org/webcam/ Vinoy is to the far left. City marina is everything else. Sailing club is just out of view to the bottom of the screen in the airport shot.
I spend one to two months every year in area. It is an awesome place to be!

Hi Boston Jim: You may look at the Gulfport Municipal Marina. Run by the city and less expensive than the others. Usually the best fuel prices too. Griff4

Not wanting to be too negative based on a single visit but my stay at The Vinoy was so rocky I had to get a room to sleep in as we were being tossed around in the slip all night. Others have told me the same thing when you have more than a 15 knot east wind. Still I'll defer to others with more experience there. Location is outstanding however. Love downtown St. Pete.

Yes, it can get pretty rocky at the Vinoy with an east wind. The yacht club has a breaker wall and tucked back in a little more than the Vinoy.
