Has anyone upgraded the stereo in their SPX (210/21)? I’m looking at adding an amp and sub which looks like I will need to upgrade the cheap Sony headunit and speakers as well. Has anyone added a sub? It looks extremely difficult to put a sub in the factory location , not quite sure how they put it in initially. Looking for any guidance.

The base stock Rockfords are holding up well to 50W RMS Each (I completed the set of 4, as the base system only had two speakers). I put in a 50x4+300 Kenwood Marine amp In the locker under the head unit. Just threw a 10” bazooka marine tube in the starboard storage compartment by the motor. In stead of a cabled remote, I control the phone via a waterproof Bluetooth remote stuck to the side of the walk through (chubby buttons).

My boat is equipped with ultra cheap Mito Marine 6.5" marine speakers (41-MS65G). The head unit is a Sony. At this point it looks like I will start with replacement of the head unit and speakers. I'll have to stay with a Sony headunit because I have the wired remote back at the swim platform. I'm looking at the DSX-M80 head unit and Polk Audio DB652 speakers.

Does your HU have Bluetooth? If so, I would highly recommend adding an amp as step one. There is little quality impact from the HU once you eliminate the on board amp. And if the speakers can actually handle 60W RMS you’ll be able to push them decently hard as long as the signal and power is clean. 6.5s will always have limited bass handling, so make sure you high pass xover them even if you don’t add a sub right away.

Since you don’t need to fade a boat, you can get away with some interesting amp setups. You can bridge the left and right speakers and only Use two amp channels if you want.
