Splash Day. Ended badly for us.

Sorry to here the bad news you said the mechanic changed the water pumps in the drives? You should have another mechanic look at the pumps to see if they were installed correctly and have him also find out why this happened it sounds like they both overheated

BINGO!!!

I am never quick to blame others... BUT this failure was not a coincidence. To have both engines fail almost simultaneously seems to indicate that there was something wrong on the cooling side of both engines.

I would get a second independent mechanic to evaluate this situation and if possible hold the first mechanic responsible for any negligence in this mater.

I am with you all. Something is rotten here. I bought the boat with no warranties implied or otherwise. The seller is not answering or returning my calls. A person at the marina in Hampton VA I used to answer a bunch of questions about the boat before I bought it is now backpeddling a bit about the engines. I pretty much got mislead. The mechanic at my marina is using the bad rebuild and no way I had a new crate engine in it because the motor mount bolts were rusted over and look like they have never been touched. I don't know how I can get him to admit if it was bad impeller install to take responsibility. You know how it is. Just no honesty anymore! I have full coverage insurance and may have some relief from them, I am awaiting a return call from them. I just hope I can get some help somewhere. Hate to be sitting at the dock for a couple of months before I can drum up the cash for two new engines. Appreciate everyone's input and sympathy here. We will come out of this and will be back on the water at some point this summer. Were not quitters!

Well I hate the situation. If you and the Mrs. Need some water time I'd be happy to take you guys out for lunch on Aftica. It's not the same but at least it would be some time on the water for you.

Very kind of you. Thank you very much. We have had several people at Meinkes make the same offer. Boating people are genuine good folks. We have met many since we have been at the marina working on our vessel. Let me know where you are at and maybe we could at least meet and have a beer or something. Regards!

Todd and Kim

Very nice of you to offer.

Is if possible you sucked something up to block water intake? then insurance might cover

I think one of the lessons for all here is about having the boat inspected by a qualified mechanic/surveyor before buying.

I/Os

Sillcocks open? Not sure. That's what happens when virgins buy a first boat. Hard lessons I guess. The mechanic changed the impellars last Friday. He ran the engines or at least told me he did. I told him we were putting in on Saturday. He said we were ready to go. Hope he gets over to check it out soon. The not knowing is driving us crazy! Hoping it's not a total bust, can afford some damage but not a total replacement.

If you were invoiced for this, you may have an out via the marina's insurance or small claims court. If not, you have an out by destroying the mechanic via this thing called the internet.

In any event, you will need new engines. Look to Jasper or US Engine for example for replacements. The 260 is a 350 block if I'm not mistaken. I don't know about the wiring but you may be miles ahead using a set of 4.3L V6's. They weigh less and produce more HP and torque. They use less fuel and depending on your ER setup, may give you more room.

Wow! That is a tough story. Basically the thing we all live in fear of happening. I would not hesitate to call my insurance company. It seems to me they could be instrumental in discovering what happened. It is better to notify them up front, before anybody does any work on the boat, and see what they recommend. Just because you talk with them does not mean you have to file a claim, but sometimes they can be a very useful in helping ferret out the truth. Also, I have used the threat of turning over a job to my insurance, as leverage to get more reasonable pricing. At the very least you need to confirm what could be covered.

This is killing me. Can we have some pics? Take some of the oil from the bilge and smear it thinly on white paper and post that too. Two engines at the same time? Not likely. The fluid? Probably from one engine and flew around in the enclosed area.

You keep saying it`s the engines? oil level good and oil clean. no burned oil smell. You cant verify you overheated. You cant verify an engine unless you pull the drive.
1 pull the spark plugs on the seized engine an post pics of the tips. your looking for any liquid
2 verify good batteres and connections.
3 pull drive to verify the motor

Not as bad as I thought they would be. My mechanic is working up a quote right now. Should knoow the damage soon. Insurance company is going to investigate and possibly give me some assistance. Hope it all works out.

My insurance company is sending out a marine surveyor. He is going to tear down the engines and find out exactly what caused this. I will keep you posted once we go through the process.

I am not a mechanic. I have my dealership change the oil in my truck. I am not pulling anything off anything. I pay people to do this stuff. The insurance company is going to send out a marine surveyor and he is going to do all this. Will let you know the outcome.

Great news! Good Luck.

Todd sounds like you know your limitations and are making great decisions. Hope you out of pocket is deductible at best and your time laid up at absolute minimum.

This thread makes me nervous,we are due to be splashed next week with new to me 370 .I have almost a 400 mile trip to get her home ,my admiral was denied vaca time so i may have a buddy take the trip with me.Even though the engines were run for the surveyor it was in a bldg and high temps were not achievable because of the conditions.I also know diddly about diesels other than the few threads i have read here.I am going to start with fw's fuel treatment program to clean up the tanks and fuel system ,i already have the diesel911 and follow up fuel additives on the boat just have to get to the fuel dock to start treatment.I bought 6 spare fuel filters(30 micron) for the racors and have 4 others that are 2 micron for back up.Also 2 spare spin on filters at the pumps/engine.Hope You catch a break on the repairs todd.

1956olds, You'll be just fine, run them cummins like a whore in heat.

You'll learn quick and find out they are really fun to own. I was in the "knew diddly about diesels" situation when I bought my boat in November. Learning is fun and goes fast. I mostly learned to keep everything cool and clean. Which means properly serviced and working aftercoolers, heat exchangers and transmission coolers. And regular changing of fuel and oil filters. You are off to a great start.
