I fixed a few little booboo's over the weekend with the spectrum gellcoat repair kit they sell. Perfect match in color and easy 123 repair. Awesome product.

I knew spectrum made gelcoat. Didn't know they made rocks, too.

No, unfortunately. After I repaired it, it dawned on me I should have take before and after pics. Doh!. next time I will, because I know there will be more.

I've got a spectrum kit and am getting ready to fix several dings. I will take some before and after pics and post 'em. Mike, did you wet sand & compound after the repair?

Just got done using spectrum for patching three small spots. 2 of them came out perfect and the other didn't but it was my fault. The difficult spot was on non skid surface. I tried using plastic wrap and silly puddy to create a template. It worked OK but I pushed too hard on the silly puddy. I will probably sand it out and try again.

Color match is perfect. I wet sanded and used 3m finishing rubbing compound.

Here's how I did it. I cleaned the area with some acetone. I scooped out some paste and added the activator. You have to be ready to go cause you have about 15 min before it starts to harden. put it on the ding, but only use enough to cover it or you'll be sanding for a bit. I then cut a thickish baggy to cover the repair so I wouldn't get dirt, hair, whatever. The plastic baggy also allows you to mold it if it's on a bend and help smooth out the paste to give you as little sanding as possible. Tape the baggy in place using the blue painters tape. I let it sit over night. Started with about 300 grit wet, then moved up to 600, then to 1000, then to 2000. but only sand enough to make the repair smooth, don't go crazy. I move to the higher grit very quickly. I then put some polish on and buff it. then wax and buff it.

To me the plastic baggy was the trick. really smooths out the paste and molds around corners.

thanks...I'll try the baggy trick.

let us know how it goes.

If anyone has any better ideas, I'd like to hear them. I tried the wax paper but I couldn't see the repair underneath it so I wasn't sure if I had any bubbles.

Always bag it!!!

How big of an area are you guys talking about?? I have two tiny nics that I would like to fix

small fixes. ding here, nic there. So far the biggest repair has been about the size of a pencil eraser. That is when I dropped the propane tank for my grille on my transom door. The smallest one my GF couldn't even see, she thought I was obsessing at this point. I usually wait until I have 3 or 4 little ones and fix them all at once.

Turtle...how quickly did you receive your kit after you ordered it? Did you order the 1 oz kit?

mmmm, can't remember, maybe a week? it was the patch kit. small bottle of paste and a small bottle of activator.

Mike, what was the number of the kit you got? Since we have the same year and model I think it should be the same as yours. I've got a spot or two I'd like to fix...

I have two small holes where there was a mic clip mounted that I would like to fill. But it is on the helm area that has a rough finish, I would not be able to sand it smooth to match. Any ideas for this? I like the sillyputty and plastic wrap idea, but would that work here? it is not a repeating non-slip type pattern.

You really have to email Sea Ray with you HIN number and get the color. I think there are like 4 different whites for our boat.

Does the plastic baggy dry onto the new gelcoat, and then you sand if off?

No, the ziplock baggy plastic did not stick to the gelcoat paste. just pulled right off after it was dry.

I saw a company on ship shape TV that made all of the different textured surface kits for patching. Can't remember the company name but you might be able to find it on ship shape TV's website.
