Speaker upgrade

A grand + :wow: Just for cranked music on the water ? I must be missing something, it seems pricey, NOT priceless.

That's ok. Some people are really into good, bold sounds, others are not. No insults required either way, just different choices.

My upgrade, (1) 6 channel JL amp. (4) 7.7 JL speakers (1) 10" sub. (1) 1400 Kiinetik batt. Every thing installed was over $1,700. Looked at the JL tower speakers $800 for the pair. Would like to get them so I can hook them up to my grab rail on my 260da when we need more sound. $800 is to much $$$$ tho. Sounds great. When we raft out other boaters hook me up to their gennys so I can play longer. I always ask if its ok before I crank it up.

Keets - check with Jim @ boemarine as he also sells JLs but he can't post his prices on his website. He may be able to help you with those.

You have to run power and ground to the battery with 4 gauge cable. I actually added a 27 seris Interstate deep cycle that the amps run off of only. I also added a independant charger for this battery and a perko that is parallel to my battery 2 to charge while running. I turn the perko off while using the stereo so the amps do not draw off my main 2 batteries.

After a long day of stereo pounding, I simply start the boat with battery 2 then turn my Perko to the amp battery "on" then charge it up on the way back to the dock.

Finally I have a Jump box aboard at all times just in case.

This sounds a little confusing me. DO you think you could draw a graph and show me? I just bought the speakers, JL Audio 7.7 from Jim today and bought a seperate amp (Rockford P400).

I should be looking forward to installing them on Saturday next week if I have time.

Are you talking about the battery setup?

If so it is run in seris with my cranking battery number 2. In between the Positive cable I just cut and spliced a on/off independant Perko. I also added a second independant battery charger just for the added battery. It is hard wired into the main power so when the battery charger breaker is on both chargers are charging.

My amps are run directly to the added battery. + and - 4 gauge wires. Remote to stereo (blue).

Of note, to get the 7.7 JL's in you will have to remove the helm seat. It was not easy as there is little room and it has to be done turn by turn with a wrench. Also you will have to increase the diameter of the factory cutouts.

I would do it all over as the JL's just ROCK loud and clear.

Thanks for the advice Kurt. I hope to tackle this next weekend. Looking forward to it.

What kind of battery did you get for the amp? Forget this question...I see you added a group 27 battery. How many amp did you get for this?

Since I am only adding the speakers and amp, is it an overkill to add a battery since I am not planning to add a subwoofer and an independent sub?

I just realized something today while I was inspecting the bilge and doing some cleaning....

I realized that the generator battery is only connected to the generator. This battery is a Seavolt (I think) with a cranking power of 665. Would it be possible to use this battery to run the amp? I am not trying to cut cost, however, I do not see any room to place the added battery solely for the amp.

I forgot you have a gen, so I think the two batteries should be sufficient. I am assuming that the gen sets starboard side so that does not leave much room for a third battery. I would just invest in a pair of quality batteries. I have all Interstate batteries and have never had much problem with them even after complete discharge. I would consider adding the sub as it just completes the deal. You could put a 10' under the deck sink pretty easy.

I am trying to get educated about battery setup including the generator battery as well.

Here is my current set up.

Battery 1 and 2 are connected to the Perko switch. Generator battery is only connected to the generator.

If I connect the amp to the generator battery, will it have enough juice to power the amp while I have the generator running? Would it be better to install an independent battery charger solely for the generator battery?

I am not sure how this will work.

This is a question for someone who has a gen and is experienced in adding 12v toys. I would probably leave the gen battery alone as the gen can be started to charge the batteries. I still think the best option is to install quality batteries and use let say battery two for the amp. When you leave port with 2 charged batteries, leave on battery two it will fully charge it. Run the stereo while out (depletes battery 2). When ready to leave switch to battery one and drive home
