Speaker Size

Merry Christmas, everyone!

brbsta - please tell me where you found the JL's for $175/pr!! Current prices I'm finding are $400+/pr. There's no flippen' way I'm spending $800 in speakers alone for the cockpit. Just not worth it to me. I want better than stock, good quality sound, but I'd prefer to put the money in the gas tank and be out on the water having fun. Don't mis-interpret my response, I appreciate the info. I looked them up and like what I see, but I think either they have gone up significantly in price, or you bought grey market.

I would love to know where you found that great price also because I can't. I chose a middle of the road speaker by Infinity because I too wanted better than stock Clarion which I don't think much of. JL are the best but very costly for the application. If I could get a deal than JL is a no brainer for me also. Try the Infinity with a clean amp I think you will find it a good compromise.

I hear ya' white glove. I used to have infinity's in a car of mine and loved them. The one drawback (at the time which was years ago) was that they were power hogs - seems they didnt' sound good without lots of power. I think I'll take a look, though. I was even surprised at the price of the Polks - they are also pushing $400/pr.

The prices you are seeing are msrp, JL runs a sale a couple times a year and you get 2 sets for the price of 1 be patient it will pay off !!!

I will check with my dealer and see if they know when the next sale is, my guess is very soon based on the economy (I am in Michigan we may have a price advantage)

Also check with Jim from BOE marine (owner of this site) as he runs deals on JL speakers.

I really think to get full benefit of any speaker you need an amp. I am using the Infinity 602m and they sound good with my sony amp. The Infinity is rated at 70 rms. I have the JL audio 10" subs. I have always bought JL subs.

I would check your local Circuit City very soon for the Polk DB line. Polks are always on sale at buy 1 get one 1/2 off but with CC's current condition, I'd expect liquidation at any time before shutting their doors. You might get lucky and get 2 pairs for a 100 bucks or so.

I bought the Polk db speakers at Circuit City in September and they went in without modification in the cockpit and cabin. Much better than the stock Panasonic speakers. Nice upgrade for the price. Next up is a new amp and sub-woofer.

I guess it boils down to your listening needs. One of the ratings that indicates a speakers quality is the sensitivity. The higher the number the better use of power. My Paradighms in the living room at home are 98db. This makes a big difference in listening where superp performance including at low oulput power levels is needed. The db rating on the infinity marine is @90 db and does require more power to achieve a comfortable level. I think however overcoming engine noises requires pushing the amp into the middle of its clean power range is usually necessary for me any way. The price differences are huge, And provided you get a relatively clean amp and don't push it into its sloppy range a less sensitive speaker can do nicely.I would be more concerned with overall ruggedness .

For whatever its worth, these are the polks I'm running

At their current price of 69 bucks, they are a steal for the momo's. These are the same speakers sea ray has used in their upgraded sound system also. The improvement over the panasonics is night and day, huge difference. But, they don't fit the stock holes, their slightly too small. If your handy with woodworking tools, its easily overcome though with some 1/4" starboard to fab some rings to mount them to and to cover the holes of the old speakers.

I turned these on a lathe but you could easily cut them out with a jigsaw and sand the edges smooth.

Rootbeer I spoke to my dealer today and the 2 for 1 sale is coming he is checking with his managment when it will start

They are the largest JL dealer in the detroit area again the deal is pay full MSRP for 1 set and get 2 sets I bought mine last fall and paid 350.00 for 2 sets (1) 7.7 and (1) set of 6.5 the msrp may have gone up but not by much. I am expecting a call back soon and I will give you his prices

Be carefull buying this stuff the mark up is huge

Just my opinion if your music is important to you find a way to get the JL's

PM me if you cannot get them where you are at I will pick them up and ship them to you

Cheers BRB :wow::wow:

My last boat I used the factory clarion head unit and speakers then just added a MTX 400 watt amp and 12" sub. You can turn the bass way down on the head unit which allows the small speakers to sound clearer at higher volumes. Use the sub and amp to bring the bass in and viola! Corvette sound on a Chevette budget!
Nothing beats high quality equipment but this sounded pretty sweet...

Great info...thanks.

BRBSTA - thanks for the offer to help out. I will definitely check some local options and see what I can come up with.

I'm very interested in the subject, as I'd like to upgrade my cockpit speakers and may be sub as well. Are you guys talking about some spesific speaker models or just 6.5" in general. I haven't heard of JL speakers and the first search I've done via Google I got great price back here:

http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=11406

From what I see, it's price for pair.

Are these the same speakers you're describing?

Thx,
Alex.

Alex we have been talking bout the m650 and m770 marine speakers. You are looking at car speakers

cheers brb

You also may want to consider if these are going into the arch...some dynamat will make a hugh difference. Much of your sound may be going up the arch and not out the front.

If you guy were buying Polks....what would you buy...the db or MOMO? I was leaning towards the db series, buy have found he MOMO's for $69 a pair. Also, somone mentioned the MOMO would not fit in the factory cutout, but looking at the specs, the hole opening for the db series is 5" and the MOMO is 5 1/16". My holes are exactly 5"...wouldn't it be easy enough to know a little of the hole with a Dremel sander? Thanks for the input.

PS...I have also wondered what kind of deal Circuit City may run on their db series.

Crutchfield has had the MOMO's listed for $70....called them yesterday, and they are sold out. There is a new model out...and they are like $189. Oh well....no MOMO's for me:smt089:smt089
