I've noticed a slight drop in power from last season. Instead of doing a battery of tests I've decided to change out the plugs. Also since I did not change them on spring commissioning I feel guilty. The current plugs are Champion RS12YC. Not sure if they're Merc standard or if the previous owner switched. Now I've heard mixed reviews on Champions. Anywhere from "total crap" to "most reliable".
Anyone have a strong opinion on the subject or should I not worry about brands too much?

If Champion has worked in the past, why not just use the same?

I would also change your fuel filter if you feel that you are down on power.

I'm sure every brand will work. Just always looking for improvement. I also noticed my engine cranks a little longer before starting. I changed the fuel filter at the start of the season. Tank was left over the winter 3/4 full. Should I have waited until the old fuel was gone before changing?

For the few dollars it costs, I would change it again, you never know. Cheap fix. If your cranking a little longer, that might be the issue.

I only use NGK plugs.
