My two cents - before I spent any real money on building up a set of spare parts I'd make sure I have all of the most important safety gear available - 1.) VHF with DSC, 2.) EPIRB, 3.) Tow Boat US membership, 4.) all the other CG required stuff and 5.) a handful of combo smoke/CO detectors.

I wold also make sure you never run out of alcohol. I mean...really....don't let yourself run out of alcohol.
People people should check their boat insurance policies before signing up for Sea Tow and other services. My policy includes the service if I need a tow. Yours may too.

Includes SeaTow or covers towing AFTER you pay for it and make a claim? Huge difference...

Maybe I have "bought in" the marketing but insurance coverage is in no way as convenient and has no trailering coverage.

Our boat was run into in Charlevoix while tied up at the city marina. It was a 37 foot Sea Ray and the damage was confined to the stainless rub rail. I took a pic of the damage, and Irish Boat Shop's barge tied up at my boat. Sent the pix, a copy of my credit card receipt and a copy of the police report to the guy's insurance company. The check arrived before I got the bill from Master Card. He had Boat US insurance. I was impressed with how nice they were to deal with on the phone.

From the I do not know file, are dead batteries, running out of gas etc. covered by insurance towing coverage?

Yes, my yacht policy covers towing up to a certain dollar amount. Don’t have it handy, but I seem to remember it to be about $1000.00.
Towing charges around here can exceed that dollar amount pretty quickly, especially if there is a grounding involved.
A lot of where we boat is shallow. Some of the channels and cuts are very narrow, unforgiving, and can get crowded at times. Not for the faint of heart. Especially early in the season before they put the buoys in, and late in the season after they take them out.
Even the most experienced boaters can have a problem
If you’re a boater around here you have either run aground, are not willing to admit you have, or are new to it and haven’t run aground yet.
TowBoatUS is cheap peace of mind. Especially if you renew at a boat show price.

Does insurance towing coverage cover soft un-groundings?

MM

Maybe a better question is what is the difference in TowBoatUS coverage and insurance towing coverage? I find it hard to believe that so many are fooled to pay for something we already have covered.

Not sure, but I would imagine so.
Fortunately, I only ran aground with my old boat once a few years back. BoatUS was quick to respond and I was back on my way, bruised ego and all.
Grounding incidents before that were many years before in boats small enough to jump out and push.

You can opt for the unlimited towing with BoatUS that covers any boat you own, rent, or borrow. That covers on water towing and soft groundings, jump starts, running out of fuel, etc.. It will also cover 50% of dock to dock towing for repairs, and up to $2500 for tows outside their service areas.

I do not believe insurance towing coverage will cover all that.

You need to read your contract as you are reminded to do every year when you get your renewal. Insofar as my contract is concerned, yes. My coverage is not that unusual. Many have this coverage. My post was simply intended to call attention to it and save folks some money if they have already paid for towing services.

I will double check that this weekend. But a quick look online shows most hull coverage has limits that can be exceeded quickly. Your situation was not with your coverage, but rather the guy who hit you, that will be different as well.

Mike. Not trying to start an argument with you. Just suggested folks have a look at their contracts and decide if they have towing coverage or feel the need to buy it if they choose to do so. Need to do the same with policy limits to make sure they are adequately protected for hull limits. Paying attention to policy coverages can save people some money. That's all I 'm saying.

Not thinking that at all, far from it. Just want to flesh this out and find out if we all can save money.

No, it’s a nice addition to my yacht policy.
There’s a pretty decent price break if you renew at a Boat Show of about $50.00 which brings it down to $99.00.
You can make some of that back with discounts on the boat show tickets themselves if you buy through them, and some transient marinas. Some fuel docks also extend a discount to members, but I’ve never really used that since I primarily get fuel delivered to my boat at my dock.
One thing that I really liked: A couple of years ago I picked up a good deal on a 2005 18’ Bowrider for my two kids to run around in. Although they’re pretty experienced boaters, they were still teenagers, and with the boat only holding 18 gallons of gas and one battery with no room for a second one, I wanted them to be covered. Called Boat US to get them a membership and towing coverage and was told they were covered under mine. I gave them my kids names and they mailed me membership cards with there names on them.
I’ve got no experience with Seatow, but it seems like they have equally good service around here. Lots of people I know have them and I’ve heard nothing but positive feedback about them.
Could be that since they both cover the area pretty equally they make sure to be competitive with good service.

I haven't looked at my policy yet, TowBoatUS says I am covered on any boat I am on or own including my open bow Monaco and my multiple inflatables.
