Sorry Dodge Cummins, I'll take a Powerstroke

The LB7 you have is pre emission and will get better mileage than the later trucks!

I know. :smt001

I'd like to run 285 tires on mine...possible? (Currently they are the stock 245's and look wimpy).

Absolutely! When you pull a heavy load with a "tuned up" Duramax and a "built" Allison, you would have just as big of a smile as I do every time I pull! At 7800lbs for the truck and, I really don't know yet what the 280 weighs but it's alot more than the advertised 8500lbs SR advertises, I get 10.5-11 at 60-65mph. Empty I get 22-23 at 60-65, 18-20 at 70-75 and 15-17 in town depending how much smoke I blow...lol. Best of all it's fun to drive while blowing the doors off the "rice burners with those bumble bee fart can mufflers" Before I built my tranny and installed the triple disc billet converter I was in the low 13's. Now I should be doing way better:smt038

When it comes to towing, my brand loyalty is blind! I want the most power/mileage with the least BREAK DOWNS! Ford has a long way to go to show us the "Scorpion" is superior to the POS 6.0! 7.3 was/is great motor, the rest of the power stroke line up....not so great.

I agree.
I do not advise anyone to do what I did and in my defence I will say that I did not realize in advance how much my boat weighed BUT...
Boat and trailer 17,700 lbs
2006 Duramax fully loaded with 2 on board 7400 lbs
Trip length 2200 miles
Miles per gallon 15 (both ways)
Problems 0

The 350??? 15 is almost unbelievable for that kinda weight! Congrats, that truck is a keeper for sure!

My apologies. I checked my trip notes and realized I was off on my calculations:
3158 km round trip (approximately 1974 miles)
Total time 74.4 hours (49.4 moving)
Moving avg speed 81.9 km per hour (approximately 50 mph)
Fuel consumed: 153 US gallons (12.9 mpg avg both ways)

So it was actually approximately 15 mpg for the Canadian gallon (slightly larger)

Oh well still a keeper...lol That was a long trip!

I think I stand corrected. I could have sworn a couple years back that Ford was installing the Allison in their heavy duty trucks but I couldn;t find it on-line. I agree the rims and tires they put on these trucks from the factory are a joke but that's ehat they have to do to increase gas mileage and satisfy the government. I put on 20" chrome rims with bigger tires (I'll post size later). They were the biggest tires I could put on without installing a lift kit which I didn't want. I can still get into all (most) arking garages and want to keep it that way. I had the cut a small portion of my front bumper though to accomadate the bigger tires.

If you factor in reliability, I'd pick the Cummins hands down. Power is in the Ford's court as far as 2011 models go. 2012 Dodges have an HO motor, with 800 ft lbs of torque, so that will be interesting. The GM duramax has always been popular and seem to be right there with dodge with dependability in the last few years. Dodge has the high milage club going on where people end up getting over a million miles out of their trucks, google it if you're interested. All in all I like the dodge. Maybe its because I own one, maybe not (I always liked Ford's truck, in fact I wish I could get a factory installed Cummins...not possible though) I think they've all got their strengths and weaknesses. One thing for sure though.... I'll never go back to a gasser.
